Sparkle: the tower on the site of York House in Waterloo will reflect and diffuse light, creating different colours as the sun goes through the sky

Rainbow-effect tower aims to be jewel in the crown of skyline

19.08.08

This glass tower is designed to create a rainbow effect across the London skyline.

The 18-storey block, nicknamed the Jewel, reflects light in different colours. It will replace York House, by Waterloo station, and will be visible from Parliament Square and Westminster Bridge.

Architect David Ardill said: "What makes the building special is the double skin and layering of the glass. The outer skin will have diagonal dimensions to create a series of small pyramids contributing to the jewel concept.

"This will animate it as the sun moves around, changing colour throughout the day."

Planning permission has been granted and the building is due to be completed in 2011. Developer Delancey wants to rent office space in the 345,000 sq ft structure.
