Police install scan arches for carnival

Jack Lefley, Evening Standard
21 Aug 2008

Revellers travelling to Notting Hill carnival this weekend will face mobile metal detection arches in Tube stations in a bid to discourage knife crime.

Tube stations on the carnival route will be fitted with mobile metal detection arches, and at least 600 British Transport Police officers will patrol trains and stations using drug detection dogs and handheld metal detectors.

Mayor Boris Johnson said: "Notting Hill Carnival is the highlight of the year for thousands of Londoners and visitors. There is no excuse for anyone to take a weapon to the event and for anyone tempted the message is clear: you will be caught."

Assistant Chief Constable Paul Crowther added: "We want to make sure anyone who has other intentions knows what they can expect from us. We are able to move metal detectors at any time across the network. Don't bring weapons to the carnival because we could be anywhere."

At least 400,000 people are expected to travel on the rail network for the carnival, which takes place from 23 to 25 August.

Good move. Maybe we could have them positioned in all High Streets and Shopping Centres too. Having more Bobbies on the beat rather than tucked away doing paperwork might help too. Obvious really! Sort it!
