Explosive start to marriage as couple's wedding car bursts into flames

Evening Standard   26 Aug 2008

A bride and groom stand stunned by the roadside - just moments after their wedding day car burst into flames.

The young Polish couple had just taken their vows at a small parish church near St Paul's Cathedral in Clerkenwell when the stretched limousine taking them to the reception turned into a fireball.

These pictures were taken by witness Valerie Martin, 59. She said: "It was an inferno, they were so lucky to get out."

Witnesses said the couple, thought to be in their early twenties, fled the 25ft-long car - along with their bridesmaids - after Saturday's drama.

Firefighters spent an hour dousing the wrecked car and police sealed off the main road in Clerkenwell.
