Racehorse boss Channon and teenage son hurt in death crash

Mick Channon, the ex-footballer turned racehorse trainer, is recovering in hospital today after being involved in a serious car crash in which his friend and associate Tim Corby was killed.

The 59-year-old former England and Southampton footballer was injured with his son Jack, 14, when the vehicle they were in veered off the M1 and hit a tree near Leicester yesterday evening.

Mr Corby, a bloodstock agent from Northampton who worked closely with Mr Channon, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokeswoman for Mr Channon's West Ilsley stables said: "Mick is in hospital with his son Jack.

"They are fine and we have been told nothing is life threatening and they are both conscious. Mick has a broken arm while Jack, possibly a punctured lung."

She declined to comment on Mr Corby, who is thought to have been driving the vehicle when it left the southbound carriageway near Kegworth.

The three were travelling from Doncaster sales to stables in Lambourn, Berkshire.

Mr Channon and his son were transferred by air ambulance to a hospital in Nottingham for treatment.

Police closed a section of the M1 for four hours following the crash.

Leicestershire Police said: "Officers were called to junction 24 of the M1 at 4.19pm after a report of a single vehicle leaving the southbound carriageway and colliding with a tree.

"It has been confirmed that one person has died at the scene. A further two people have been taken to hospital."

Mr Channon made his name in the Seventies as a striker for Southampton. In two spells at the club he became their leading all-time league scorer with 185 goals.

He also appeared 46 times for England, scoring 21 times.

Since his retirement from football in 1986 he has gone on to enjoy a successful career in horse racing.

He started with 10 horses at a yard in Lambourn but moved in 1999 to West Ilsley in Newbury, which was previously owned by the Queen.

In 2002, Channon topped the 100-winner mark for the first time and in 2003 he also broke through the £2 million prize money barrier.

Mr Channon's associates in racing include Kevin Keegan and Sir Alex Ferguson.

A spokesman for Southampton Football Club said: "This is clearly very upsetting news and our thoughts are with the family of Mick and the other people in the car."
