Disruption: Bus drivers are staging a strike

2,500 drivers on strike in pay row

29.08.08

About 2,500 London bus drivers started a 24-hour strike today in a row over pay.

Workers faced a struggle to get into the office after the action by First employees hit 80 routes across the capital.

The strike began at 3am today and was expected to affect routes in east and west London.

Members of the Unite union are demanding a standard rate of pay of £30,000 across the network.

The company today insisted its offer of a four per cent pay increase was "reasonable".

A TfL spokeswoman said: "London Underground is accepting bus tickets on reasonable routes where bus services are disrupted this morning."

bus drivers deserve a much better pay.people dont reconised the responsibilities we have in our hands.its only when things go wrong then people realise its a dangerous job.

Most London bus drivers are on between £10 and £11 p/h bus drivers should stop moaning and get on with there job, at least they are reasonably paid.

William Grierson - if you lived in the real world, you would understand a seaside town such as Weymouth has very little "other" work. I do enjoy my job but find the pay hard to live on. That's all. I don't want to skive and be on the dole, I would rather be working. I support the strike action as per my comments earlier. I suggest you spend a day driving a bus in service and you will see the difficulty we have.

- John, Weymouth, UK
