Leicester Square to get £200m hotel and casino on site of old Swiss Centre

A five-star hotel with a casino and restaurant is to be built in Leicester Square in a £200 million development.

The 10-storey 194-room hotel, simply called W, will be on the site of the former Swiss Centre building and is due to be completed in 2010.

The development includes 10 penthouses and has been designed by architects Jestico + Whiles, who also created restaurant Hakkasan and Bow Street Police Museum. W hotels' parent company Starwood also owns hotel chains Sheraton and Le Meridien.

In a separate development across the square, plans have been unveiled to knock down the Odeon West End and replace it with a nine-storey block with a hotel, flats and restaurants - and the cinema in the basement.
