Shannon's mother faces kidnap charge

The mother of Shannon Matthews was today accused of taking part in the nine-year-old's abduction and false imprisonment.

Karen Matthews denied the new charges put to her at Leeds crown court.

She had previously only been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice - which she also denies - by allegedly failing to tell police where her daughter was.

Matthews, 32, will stand trial on all three charges in November with co-accused Michael Donovan, 39, who denies the same charges.

Shannon disappeared in February but was discovered 24 days later less than a mile from her home in Dewsbury Moor, West Yorkshire, after a massive search.

Donovan, of Dewsbury, is the uncle of Shannon's stepfather Craig Meehan and was arrested in March after the girl was found. Matthews was arrested in April.
