Train gang locked up for robberies

Three members of a south London gang were beginning sentences today for robbing teenagers in so-called steaming attacks.

Lewis Johnson, 21, Ashton Wright, 18 and a 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were convicted of offences on a train from East Croydon in August last year. They targeted teenagers heading home from the Liquid Envy club nights in Croydon.

The three were part of a larger gang who lay in wait for their victims after reading details about the club nights.

Detective Sergeant Tony Burman of the British Transport Police said the group was responsible for a robbery spree against victims as young as 15.

Johnson, of Streatham, was jailed at Croydon Crown Court for three years and four months on three charges of robbery.

Wright, of no fixed abode, was given three years in a young offenders' institute and the 17-year-old sentenced to a two-year detention and training order.
