Prince William to become RAF search and rescue pilot

Prince William is to become a fulltime pilot with the RAF's Search And Rescue Force.

The decision, announced by Clarence House today, means William, 26, who has been prevented from fighting in war zones, can fulfil his ambition to "serve operationally".

The second in line to the throne, who became a keen pilot after training with the RAF this year, will fly Sea King helicopters on mercy missions assisting ships or mountain hikers in distress.

He has gained experience with the Army and Royal Navy over the past two years in preparation for his role as future head of the Armed Forces.

He said today: "I now want to build on the experience and training I have received to serve operationally - especially because, for good reasons, I was not able to deploy to Afghanistan this year with D Squadron of the Household Cavalry Regiment. The time I spent with the RAF earlier this year made me realise how much I love flying.

"Joining Search and Rescue is a perfect opportunity for me to serve in the forces operationally, while contributing to a vital part of the country's emergency services."

The prince will begin an 18-month training course with SARF in January and then undertake a 30 to 36-month tour of duty at one of the force's six bases around the country.

The training at RAF Valley in North Wales will take up much of his time until 2010. The commitment is likely to dampen speculation that he is planning to propose to long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton, 26, within the next few months as there would be little time for a wedding.

Nice to know the business vehicle will now be available 24/7 for personal use. The rest of us have to pay the very high fuel costs, TAX and insurance.

As long as Mark Thatcher is not the Prince's co-pilot he should be OK.

That's nice! Maybe if it does not work out he can join the Coast Guard or anything else that takes his Royal fancy.
