* July 7 - Suicide bomb attacks kill 52.
* July 21 - Copycat attack. Devices fail to explode.
* July 22 - Jean Charles de Menezes mistaken for July 21 suspect and shot seven times.
* July 24 - Sir Ian Blair defends apologises to innocent victim's family as Met "accepts full responsibility".
* July 27 - IPCC starts investigation - "Stockwell One".
* August 16 - Leaked documents reveal de Menezes did little to arouse suspicion.
* October 12 - De Menezes family make official complaint to IPCC.
* November 28 - IPCC announces inquiry into their complaint - "Stockwell Two".
2006
* March 16 - Reports emerge that someone in Sir Ian's private office suspected blunder just six hours after shooting.
* May 5 - Secretary Lana Vandenberghe says she leaked documents to expose "a lie". Three arrests, no charges.
* July 17 - CPS announces it will prosecute Met Police under health and safety laws.
* August 3 - Sir Ian questioned under disciplinary caution over conduct.
2007
* May 11 - De Menezes family accuse Met of "getting away with murder" after IPCC announces 11 officers will not be punished.
* August 2 - "Stockwell Two" finds "serious weaknesses" in how Met handled critical information. Sir Ian "almost totally uninformed".
* November 1 - Met convicted of health and safety breaches and fined £175,000 with £385,000 costs.
* November 8 - IPCC publishes "Stockwell One", criticising Sir Ian and revealing catalogue of errors.
* December 21 - IPCC says four senior officers, including head of operation DAC Cressida Dick, should face no disciplinary action.
2008
* June 30 - Sir Michael Wright QC grants 44 officers anonymity at inquest.
* September 22 - Inquest opens.
