The woman who got a bit tights at the Berkeley ball

Robert Mendick, Evening Standard
26 Sep 2008

As dignified exits from balls in London squares go, this must rank pretty low.

Instead of stepping into a taxi and just going home like most people, this guest at the End Of Summer Ball in Berkeley Square - price of ticket £700 - chose an alternative course of action.

Presumably a little the worse for alcohol, she decided the early hours of today would be a good moment to pick a fight with her partner. The row escalatedand police stepped in to calm her down.

The woman, however, appears to have become even more aggressive. She was wrestled to the ground, arrested and then, with an officer at each limb, bundled headlong into the back of a police van.

She was last seen with her legs disappearing from view. If that wasn't embarrassing enough - and this morning, boy will she be shame-faced - the last photograph in the sequence reveals a jolly great hole in her tights.

The ball in Berkeley Square is a relatively new fixture on the social calendar. It started three years ago with money raised going to the Prince's Trust.

This year's event - star guests included David Beckham's alleged former lover Rebecca Loos, Sir John Major's former daughter-in-law Emma Noble and Pippa Middleton, sister of Kate, the girlfriend of Prince William - had something of a fighting theme.

The food was prepared under the auspices of the somewhat pugnacious chef Marco Pierre-White while the musical entertainment was provided by that well-known shrinking violet Amy Winehouse.

True to form, Winehouse produced what might be described as a trademark-performance. She sang on stage with her 12-year-old god-daughter at her side and then proceeded to try to headbutt (allegedly) the official photographer.

Backstage she collapsed in a heap and declared something along the lines of "I can't go on".

Meanwhile, outside the venue, our curly-haired friend was being arrested for a public order offence. It must be something in the water.

"star guests included David Beckham's alleged former lover Rebecca Loos, Sir John Major's former daughter-in-law Emma Noble and Pippa Middleton, sister of Kate, the girlfriend of Prince William". Blimey how stellar. I am more famous than these people. Probably.

What on earth is a 12 year old doing at an event like this? Regardless of whether she is her god daughter or not Amy Winehouse cannot be classed as a responsible adult to be in charge of somebody so young......!
