An independent London shop has won a top prize at the British Cheese Awards.

Yellowwedge Cheese, in St Margarets, Twickenham, was named Best New Deli at the ceremony at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

The shop, which opened last year, specialises in rare cheeses from Britain and the Continent, including Little Wallop - made by former Blur bass player Alex James, and Stinking Bishop - made famous by Wallace and Gromit. Owner David Harries said: "We are absolutely delighted and want to thank our customers in the local community for their overwhelming support."

The Standard is championing independent shops in a retail world increasingly dominated by the big chains.
