Stores warned after selling knives to children

06.10.08

Greenwich: Ten stores in the borough illegally sold knives to under-18s during an operation by the council and police.

Volunteers aged 14 to 17 visited 27 premises. In 10, they were sold blades including craft and kitchen knives.

Councillor Maureen O'Mara said: "It's appalling that so many stores appear to be flouting the law. The disregard for public safety is totally inexcusable and will not be tolerated in Greenwich."

The offending stores were: Avery Trumans, Pound Stop and Woolworths in Eltham; B&Q and Sainsbury's in Greenwich Peninsula; Poundland and Sainsbury's in Woolwich; and Pound Shop, LouRoys and CK Builders' Merchants in Plumstead. They have been sent letters of caution.
