'Bad' signs lead to £550,000 fines

Evening Standard
07.10.08

A junction where confused motorists have been fined more than £550,000 has finally been changed.

Since 2005 thousands of drivers have been fined £120 for contravening signs instructing them to turn right into Tamworth Road when travelling south in London Road, Croydon.

Motorists protested and a parking adjudicator ruled the signs were confusing in February 2005. Croydon council, believed to be fining 30 drivers a day, maintained the signs were clear. In August 2006 the council agreed to improve the junctions. However, the junction has only now been changed, with hundreds of drivers fined in the meantime. The council said drivers had the chance to appeal against the penalty at the time of issue.
