Anger at 'racist' Harry Enfield Filipina sketch

Benedict Moore-Bridger

The Philippine community in Britain criticised comedian Harry Enfield today for a sketch in which a man urges his neighbour to "mount" a Filipina maid.

A petition has been launched condemning the BBC show Harry And Paul for the "disgraceful" skit which is "tantamount to racism".

The Philippine government has already protested about the sketch, which was shown in September and its embassy in London has sent a letter of protest to the BBC, the Secretary of State for Women and the Press Complaints Commission.

In Manila, the foreign secretary Alberto Romulo summoned British ambassador Peter Beckingham to discuss the matter. The British embassy there was forced to issue a statement saying the BBC has editorial independence and the views expressed and portrayed by the network "are completely independent" from the Government.

During the sketch, a man urges his lethargic neighbour to have sex with a Filipina maid. The petition, attributed to the Philippine Foundation, calls for the "re-education" of the BBC. It says: "This particular sketch is completely disgraceful, distasteful and a great example of gutter humour." A BBC spokeswoman said: "We have not received any formal complaint."

Enfield, 47, was crowned Loaded Legend at an awards ceremony last week. He has reportedly said he was "banned" from playing a Muslim hoody and a paedophile priest in the series.

There's so much rubbish going about in the government of the Philippines itself that its citizens sacrifice living in other countries and doing odd jobs for the sake of their own loved ones. Being proud and passionate for their country and heritage are the only things left in their dignity.

There are a lot of honest Filipina women who just come there to work, in the hope of getting a better life. Any other human being deserves the right to be regarded with respect and dignity. By portraying Filipinas, as someone who is dull and meek enough to follow the employer's every whim, including mating a neighbor, isn't that disrepectful? I mean...is that funny? It's more like...disturbing. Come one people we're better than this.

So we are not allowed to laugh anymore. How sad.

Mmm,the Philippine community here are so proud and passionate for their country they are living in Britain?
Personally,I find it offensive that they take offence.

The BBC is now the station of creating trouble in society ,we all over the world use to listen and look up to the BBC sadly they have lost the vision and the people they use to support. The constant attack on minorities and christians is over the top.The license funding should be taken away immediately.

I'm a fan of British comedy shows because I like the way they play on the 'stereotype' of the British as stiff and reserved. The shows, marked by irreverent jokes that almost spare no one, are remarkably funny in my opinion.

Unfortunately for us Filipinos, we have been, for many times, the subject of these jokes and dialogue mentions. I don't clearly know why. Perhaps it's because we are all over the world: working in hospitals or homes, joining reality TV talent competitions, winning in beauty pageants, and so on. This might as well be an unintended effect of this exposure to the world arena.

For this, I am willing to accept the Harry and Paul joke with good humour. However, others may not see things my way. And I completely understand why representatives of my government have filed protests about the incident. I support them as well. Perhaps, a "re-education" of the BBC is not necessary. A little cultural sensitivity, though, from a nation who prides itself in its culture, would go a long way.

hey I read the news about the BBC. they should apologized thats a 'racist'. and it is unfair for all filipina women like me and for all filipinos who come here for work.we are here for work and we work hard so that we can give help for our country and for our family and that sketch is completely disgraceful. I think The BBC need to re-educate so that they are not going to write a joke sketch and make a joke about every 'racist'

My God! "re-education" of the BBC, the most politically correct, repressive, anti-free speech, left-wing broadcasting organisation in the (once) free world? How?

Given the human rights record of the Phillipines government since the second world war, their version of "re-education" is likely to be very far from intellectual discussion and gentle persuasion. Their government should be told that people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones - and that they would do well to take a few lessons from the BBC.

Go to Dubai, check out the amount of attractive Philippino women who marry (physically) unattractive, though hardworking western gentlemen clearly and exclusively for money and then tell me the stereotype isn't valid. Plenty of UK stereotypes are valid too, though stereotypes are stereotypes - based on a fair whack of reality. If you want to avoid them, demonstrate they're an exageration or share the view it's something you're not proud of and keen to eradicate, rather than throwing your hands up in the air when the world spots what is actually quite accepted as usual...
