Dentistry 'blunders'

Anna Davis

The reform of NHS dentistry which the Government began two years ago has not been not good enough, ministers admitted today.

A statement issued by the Department of health said that a revised contract introduced for dentists in 2006 had created a "difficult transition period" and an "insufficient focus on quality".

It follows a review by the Commons health select committee which said the contract had made conditions for dentists worse and would drive them to go private.

The statement said: "We have acknowledged that there was insufficient focus on quality during the difficult transitional first year of the contract."
