Tribute concert raises £7,000 for 'Jimmy buses'

A concert organised in memory of murdered teenager Jimmy Mizen has raised nearly £7,000.

Jimmy was the 13th teenager to die violently in London this year after being attacked at a baker's near his home in Lee in May.

The charity event organised by family and friends of the 16-year-old has already raised enough money for the "Jimmy Bus" appeal, launched to fund three minibuses for youth organisations.

They will have Jimmy's name written on the side and will be a memorial to the teenager.

Today Mr Mizen said: "The response has been amazing. We were not expecting as many people taking an interest like this. It was very much a low-key thing really but it has taken off without us trying really. Generally people want to do something to help, even if it is just being there."

Saturday's event at the Astoria2 nightclub in Charing Cross Road will showcase local bands.

Jimmy's parents, six brothers and two sisters will be at the concert called Sparkle: A Concert For Jimmy. His brother Tommy, 26, will sing a song about Jimmy entitled Sparkle, which he wrote with friend Antony Morgan. The song has also been released on iTunes. Tommy said: "It is an amazing tribute to Jimmy because he loved music so much."

The teenager had turned 16 the day before he was attacked. He suffered a fatal neck injury from a shard of glass while with his brother Harry, 18, at the Three Cooks bakery. More than 2,000 people attended his funeral.

Jake Fahri, 19, has been charged with Jimmy's murder. So far 27 teenagers have been killed violently in London this year.

Jimmy was a great kid and I will never forget him. I worked with him at STM School and he was a credit to the school. If I had the money I would give a large donation - but unfortunately I do not have the money to do that. Rest in Peace - you friendly boy. Also your family - I hope they are still strong and coping.
