Bicycle lights that harness solar power
David Williams, Motoring Editor10 Oct 2008
A solar-powered lighting harness for cyclists has been unveiled in London.
Just three hours of sunshine, or even rays from a light bulb, are enough to power up the device for three hours of use.
The £23 "baglite" has a red light at the rear and two white floodlights at the front. It also has bright side-lights so cyclists can be seen at junctions where most accidents occur.
The harness fits over any rucksack.

Peter Killick,
I see you have a rather large chip on your shoulder. It might interest you to learn that currently cyclists have "killed nobody" on Britains roads, regardless of their disregard for the highway code. Motorists however contribute to the vast majority of the 3000+ road accidents each year - and that's with them following the highway code dilligently I presume!
There is one incident of a 'cycle causing death' where a man was riding down the pavement (and it should be pointed out he had learning difficulties).
What folk like you don't realise is the highway code was only introduced as a result of the invention of the motor car and the accidents they brought - bikes had been around long before that.
The rules of the road should be about safety and not simply applied because they are there. If it weren't for motorists then we could al get around safely simply by using common sense - something sadly lacking in your average driver.

Susan Porter,
as cycling rates rise injuries lessen ? I think you will also find the number of cyclist deaths have risen too,and its proportional to the amount of cyclists who think they can ignore the highway rules and regulations !

Not a bad idea actually, sideways visibility is needed with the current standards of driving in London. Not sure about the mirrors, difficult to refocus quickly and I think it's better to glance back and look at the driver if a pinch point's coming up. And Mr Killick, cyclists successfully lobbied to have the Highway Code changed when an unwise endorsement of cycle lanes was proposed. Please don't turn this into yet another slagfest toward cyclists. More and more positive articles like the one above should encourage more cyclists onto London's roads, making it safer for all of us. You can't change the evidence, as cycling rates rise injuries lessen, a civilising of the roads. And of course more drivers start cycling!
