Police target 'status symbol' dangerous dogs

Katharine Barney, Evening Standard

Police have warned owners of dangerous illegal dogs that they will be seized.

Figures have revealed the number of offences involving dangerous dogs in Barnet has steadily risen over the past three years, and officers are taking action to stop the problem getting worse.

In the financial year 2005/06 there were 32 dangerous dog offences but this year there have already been 29 with another six months to go. Sergeant Lee Benham, of the East Finchley safer neighbourhood team, said: "Our message to owners of dangerous dogs is that we will be targeting you. These dogs are illegal and it is only a matter of time before one of them carries out a serious attack on a person.

"There has been a worrying increase in the number of people who own these types of dogs as 'status symbols', and we are doing all we can to tackle that problem and eliminate illegal dogs from the borough."

What research has proven that pit bulls are genetically flawed or prone to attacks? As a person who has researched this breed for over 6 years, I can tell you, all attempts to do so have failed and only proven that pit bulls are like any other dogs...4 legs, one heart. This is just another myth that is perpetuated by those who buy into media sensationalism. Remember dobermans, rottweilers, german shepards...they have all been through this stigma at some point in time... There is no such thing as a bad breed of dog, there are bad owners.

Dangerous dogs, well firstly unless you are talking about pittbulls i dont believe in dangerous dogs, it has been widely proven that its the owners who are dangerous. anyone who gets a kick out of seeing a dog attack someone or something is obviousley a bit WEAK and twisted. i own 2 staffie's boy and girl mum and son and sometimes the looks you get just because they're staffs, people are terrified but they are soft as and i would trust them with my life. when the dogs act was introduced ALL legal pitbulls were nuetered or spayed, why do we have pits running around now with all their bits and NO ONE is doing anything about it. DESTROY ALL PITTBULLS there is something genetically wrong that makes them switch.

My dog, a rescue English Mastiff, was attacked by one of these so called dangerous dogs a few days ago. The young owner stood smugly watching while it tore in to my soft natured boy. I can assure you with an owner like that it doesn't make one bit of difference what breed you ban, this dog had obviously been trained and encouraged by his owner to be dog aggressive.

We meet lots of bull breeds in my local park everyday that my dog enjoys playing with, all lovely dogs, all owned by responsible people. It’s the bad owners that need to be targeted not the dogs. If their dogs are simply taken from them they’ll just go out and buy another. Trying to eliminate a breed won't work, banning a type of dog draws thugs to the breed, even if they were to succeed in making pit bull types extinct, these scumbags would simply move on to another breed. A dog, it doesn’t matter which breed, is what it's owner makes it, these irresponsible young lads are the problem, it is they that need to be targeted not the dogs.

Thankfully my dog survived his ordeal, had he been a small dog he wouldn’t have stood a chance. To add insult to injury, my poor dog has gone without his park walks for the last few days all because I feel too scarred knowing there a high chance of this happening again. The problem is getting worse not better. Please do something about these type of people.

Unfortunately not everyone who owns these so called 'dangerous dogs' are irresponsible. Some are actually law abiding citizens who own a beloved dog who happens to fit the very loose description of 'pit bull type', and do not realize that their dog is actually illegal. Cross a Staffordshire bull terrier with a Labrador and you have a dangerous illegal dog!? Most dogs are status symbols, hence you have very expensive pedigree dogs. Demonising any breed will just encourage irresponsible ownership as people think it will make them look harder. It is not the dogs fault. I also wish they would print more detailed statistics so we could get the real picture.

These dogs should be carefully controlled. There is a pit bull type (owned by teenagers)that, as I have observed, is being trained as a fighter
I am an owner of a rescue dog. She is neutered, chipped and had all her injections. I take her on an extended lead and a halti (Noseband) as she is young and pulls. I keep her on a lead when in a public area and in the park. I live on the boarders of Brent (although I live in Barnet). I am fed up with the owners that let their dogs off the lead and let them "run wild". The worst offenders are the dog walkers who, at times, have as many as 6 dogs that they are unable to control. My dog has been attacked by one of these.
I must admit that I have met some very pleasant people and dogs.
I always clear up my dogs "business" and put it in the bins. I have noticed that some owners fail to do this. THIS IS THE LAW.
There should be more patrols in parks and open spaces to eliminate these unsociable people.

My pit x was taken by police, after 4 months we got him back after being tattooed and castrated, my now exempted (no longer deemed dangerous by the courts) dog, has at all times to be muzzeled in public, and on a lead even if in the car, yet everyday I see these and other types of dogs on the roads.. Would it not be a good idea that ALL dogs are muzzled, then they wont be able to bite anyone. all dogs are capable of injuring someone so no dog should be exempt..
But I think that is too hard a request for the government to take on board....Fools.

Don't warn the morons who own these dangerous and illegal dogs - "just do it" - and not just in East Finchley either.
