NYC fare dodger grabs police gun and opens fire

TWO policemen were shot in a New York subway station during the evening rush hour after a man they were arresting took one of their guns.

Another policeman at Queens station shot the suspect in his legs and body as he tried to flee. The two plainclothes transit officers wore bulletproof vests. Shane Farina was shot near his sternum and suffered a broken rib.

He was in a critical but stable condition last night, as was Jason Maass, who was shot in the lower back. The suspect, Raul Nunez, 32, was in police custody. His condition was unknown. Police said he entered the station by illegally swiping a child's discounted fare card, setting off a warning light.

Lieutenant Gary Abrahall radioed the two officers on the station platform, who got one handcuff on Mr Nunez before he began resisting. He grabbed one officer's gun and fired at both of them.

He took an escalator to the upper level, where Lt Abrahall confronted him. He was then hit four times. Mr Nunez was due to be charged with attempted murder.
