Mini-cameras give police an extra eye on the beat

POLICE officers are to be equipped with body cameras in an attempt to deter antisocial behaviour and gather evidence for prosecutions.
Four boroughs Camden, Bromley, Havering and Wandsworth are piloting use of the £1,700 cameras in a scheme funded by the Home Office with contributions from councils.
The device is clipped around an ear or on to the chest and can be switched on whenever the officer thinks it is merited.
Up to 400 hours of video and audio footage can be stored and then produced as evidence in court. It is hoped that the sight of one will deter troublemakers, and mean officers spend less time making notes.
The move comes after a pilot project in Plymouth by Devon and Cornwall Constabulary led to an increase in successful prosecutions.
Havering councillor Peter Gardner, cabinet member for community safety, said: "The police are making real progress. These cameras will hopefully make Havering even safer for people who want a night out."
Inspector Andy Conway of Havering police added: "We are committed to reducing crime and increasing the public's confidence. We will continue to invest and use innovative new technologies to achieve these aims."

Suppose it had to happen. There seems to be one risk factor though, instead of an officer storing the data upon his person it should be sent straight to a control room. Any attacker aware of the camera will, in a heated provoked situation, think about destroying any evidence.
