Crossrail's £500 million green stop at the Wharf

HERE is the new image of the proposed £500 million Crossrail station, jutting out into the waters at Canary Wharf.

The station at North Dock will include a shopping centre with restaurants and cafés, and a roof transformed into a public park with water features.

It will also have walkways to Poplar in the north and the Isle of Dogs via Canary Wharf in the south. Planning permission is being sought for the design, created by Foster and Partners.

The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) has praised the "confident" plans for the shopping centre but said the green space could be improved. The Canary Wharf Group, which is financing the station, said it would address the issues highlighted by CABE.

"The scheme aims to be distinct from commercial buildings at Canary Wharf, but achieve the same high standards of design quality and environmental performance," said Howard Dawber, Canary Wharf Group strategic adviser.

Crossrail will run from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east via the West End, City and Docklands.

Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon has vowed the link will open in 2017. Ministers have floated the idea that it will be one of the infrastructure projects they will press ahead with to shore up the economy amid the downturn.

Bob, it will cost £500m as stated in the article. And taxpayers will be paying for it

Dear Bob, the article says Canary Wharf Group is financing the station. That means it isn’t relevant to you how much it costs as it is not public money. It is a private company improving their assets.

This is exactly the type of investment in transport infastructure that the Capital needs. The total Crossrail budget has already been approved at £16 billion. It was good to hear that the Mayor of London is talking to TFL to bring this project forward. As reported here TFL announced yesterday that it is seeking bids for the £500m contracts at Tottenham Court Road station to begin next January.

This extra transport capacity will serve London well in the future while providing gainful employment over the next decade.

The 02 invested in a fleet of catamaran/ clippers on the Thames and already they are transporting 1200 passengers every hour. The London Assembly should see to it that there is additional investment in piers and Clippers for river transport. There was talk that travelcards would be accepted on river transport but I dont know if the new Mayor has taken that idea forward?.

And how much more of the docks will be lost? Canary Wharf is fast losing what little character it started out with.

£500 million Crossrail station & The Canary Wharf Group, which is financing the station.
Both readily available in the article above...

This is needed like a hole in the head in these hard financial times (with Brown about to borrow £100billion). Crossrail already has a planned stop at Stratford, and it's only a short journey on the DLR from Stratford to Canary Wharf.

Bob - it's due to cost £500m, and financed by the Canary Wharf Group. There's a clue in the headline.

2 questions, how much will it cost and who's paying for it?
