Spend, spend, spend says Boris

Ellen Widdup
28.10.08

BORIS JOHNSON has called for the public to spend their way out of the recession.

The Mayor said people should continue to take holidays, eat out, take taxis and go to the theatre to fuel the economy.

He said: "This isn't the Black Death. This isn't some disaster movie about a virus from Mars. It's a recession, a downturn, a correction of a kind that is indispensable to any kind of human activity, and it does not require us to go around under a special kind of credit-crunch pall.

"It does not mean we have to cancel all parties and talk in hushed credit-crunch tones. It does not mean we have to line our rooms with newspaper, get in a foetal position and live on tins: in fact, it means the opposite ... This is not a moment for dowdiness and self-sufficiency. This is the moment for a life-affirming splurge."

Boris the clown airing his silver spoon thoughts again. Not everyone was born in to cash, and not many have cash to splash at the moment. The cost of living sucks you dry.

I think we need Donald Duck & Mickey Mouse to run this country. No one else worth voting for, and I don't think they can make much more of a mess of this country than has already been made.

Frank from the Home Counties, yours is one of the most offensive comments I've ever read on here, and that's saying something. How many Muslim men do you know 'with 16 wives'?

- Charlie, Soho, London

Some of the comments here are just idiotic. Boris isn't advocating spending beyond your means or running up huge debts. He is simply trying to point out that people should carry on as normal, for the benefit of the economy and to get Britain back on its feet.

Live within your means, but don't cut back on spending so much that the economy never recovers. His point is that life goes on, and that panicking and hoarding our earnings will only send the economy further down the pan.

Don't contribute to the economic downturn. Instead, try and get on with your lives, push through the pain and we will once again see better days.

- Steven, London

Its official, Boris is crazy.... this spend, spend, spend got us into the credit crunch to start with. What about save, save, save... if you can and have paid off the spend, spend, spend bills. Great leadership, God help London. Cant help but wait for the next Dictat from our supreme leader.

- Bondy, spain

Easy for Mr Johnson to say. Will he also be good enough to provide the spending money... of course not as it is easier said than done! Anyway from his point of view, its party politics and the economy he is worrying about, not the bankrupt consumer driven society living on mountains of debt, mortgage and credit card arrears and also not forgetting the day to day diminishing pay-packets.

- Lee, Barnet, London

Thats more like it! Red Boris is backing Gordon's plans on spending our way out of this recession. But lets not also forget about saving for a rainy day, and spending and saving in moderation.

- Dhanraj, Basildon

Tell you what Boris, you give me some of that whopping salary you get and I will gladly go out and blow it.

Currently, as it happens, I have to work all hours to pay the taxes which support the huge social welfare society that Labour voters revel in.

You know the huge bill tax payers foot: welfare payments to families in other European countries; health tourists leaching of our free NHS system; polygamist Muslims who come to the UK with their 16 wives; housing immigrants in multi-million pound houses; soon to be unemployment payments to the hundreds of thousands of people who Labour threw the doors open to. Oh and did I mention the Labour voters, "Chavs 'R Us".

Funnily enough Boris, I still cannot get on the housing ladder. Not really in touch are you?

- Frank, Home Counties, England

I encourage everyone to spend all you can, if you don't spend it Mr Brown will spend it for you!

However, I shall keep living within my means and putting some cash aside for when I actually need it.

- Ben, London, W1

Says the man from a well off background who can afford to spend, spend, spend. Is it exactly because people have been living on credit (well beyond their means) that we're in the mess we're in now. Perhaps if everyone cut up their credit cards if would help, and the Banks refused to issue them (fat chance).

- Sue, Orpington, Kent

Spend what exactly? The bare essentials have gone up so dramatically there is nothing left to splash out on fun stuff.

If I could I would go on holiday, but if the economic situation is global, how come the pound is doing so badly against all the other currencies? If we are all in the same boat the exchange rates should be holding steady, shouldn't they? The pound seems to be falling against every other currency.

- Deborah, London

Boris is fast becomong the most embarrassing politician of all time. He makes George W Bush seem a member of mensa.

- Keith Price, Luton, England

Let them eat cake!! Where do we get the money to spend, spend and spend?

- Pt, London

It is spending and taking out credit to spend that got the world i nthe state it is. Spend within your means is ok but do not spend more than what you earn. That is stupid.

- Ignoramus, Redhill Surrey

The salaries have to go up to aloud people to spend more. We need, however, to be cautious with the inflation and the borowing, but this is the only way out of the crisis!

- Theo, Inverness, Scotland

FANTASTIC!!!
Couldn't agree more, what goes up must come down & all that, it's all cyclical, we just have to ride it out & wait for the next UP!!! No point getting all downmouthed & negative.

- Georgie, BUCKS

I suppose when you have a salary of a few hundred of thousands of pounds without the fear of redundancy you can make statments like that. Unfortunately for the rest of us who dont earn that kind of money and live in the fear of redundancy spending money on taxis, eating out etc is not possible.

- Martin, London

i'll just max out my credit card again then shall i? What a good idea. Maybe i'll take some more equity out of my house to fund a big party. Are the good times back already?

- Roger, London

Idiot. It's living beyond our means that brought us to this point.
