Elizabeth Hopkirk31.10.08
A THRIVING pub in Borough is to close in January after 237 years as a viaduct for the Thameslink expansion is driven through its upper storeys.
The Wheatsheaf in Stoney Street was built on land given to the wardens of Southwark Cathedral in 1584 an 18th-century map shows the alley behind the pub was called "whores' nest". Regulars have now decided to celebrate the pub with a book to be launched on 4 November The Wheatsheaf 2001-2008. Landlord Tony Barry, 48, said: "We wanted to do something positive rather than crying." Profits will go to the charity Kids Company.

You're on the wrong thread, Ed.
This fine pub should be disembled brick-by-brick and rebuilt as close as possible to its original site.

Excellent attitude. If all those at Sipson village can be as positive as him about Heathrow's 3rd runway then the world would be a better place.
