Shinawatra gives up UK asylum bid

Evening Standard
10 Nov 2008

FORMER Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has given up his fight to be given asylum in Britain.

The deposed ruler, who was jailed for two years in his absence in Thailand last month for breaking a conflict of interest law while in power, is banned from Britain. After surfacing in China today, he said: "I will keep travelling. I'm leaving Beijing at the moment."

Now it seems that our convicted ex-pm Thaksin has become an international hot potato. He is beginning to discover that his plundered billions cannot buy everyone.

Our country is now teetering on the brink of civil war, due to his political activities inciting hatred and conflict in our society.

Now the world will have to watch as Mr Thaksin finishes off what he has begun by pushing our country over the precipice into bloodshed. It is so sad that he had the potential to become the greatest statesman that Thailand had ever seen, but chose to throw it all away.
