Regrets: Marianne Faithful

I wasted my time with drugs, says Marianne Faithful

Peter Allen in Paris
20 Nov 2008

MARIANNE Faithfull today claimed that her one regret in life was taking drugs.

The 61-year-old Sixties survivor made her name as the girlfriend of Mick Jagger, embarking on a rock and roll life fuelled by everything from cannabis to heroin.

She said: "The only thing I regret is to have taken drugs but there's nothing I can do about it now. I truly wasted my time. As for the rest, I would do it exactly the same."

Faithfull, who now lives in Paris, added: "I know that I have the reputation of being completely wild, of having been a junkie, all that. But if I had gone too far, I wouldn't be here today. Believe me, I have calmed here."

She has recovered from breast cancer to record Easy Come, Easy Go, her 22nd album.

Many blamed cocaine for altering the sound of her voice, leaving it cracked and lower in pitch. Faithfull said she missed the schoolgirl tones which had characterised her first hit As Tears Go By, saying: "I love my little voice from when I was very young, but I'm very happy at the way it has evolved."

I presume she still likes Mars Bars, even though they are smaller than they were in the good old sixties.

I'm always amazed how Brits let their hair down in emails. Calling people "dreary old has-beens" and "old cows" is civilized? Anyway, I remember Marianne from my extreme youth and, yes, she was one of my favorites. I like to remember the best in people.

She could still do a voice over for a Mars Bar commercial

If you can stay alive for another 20 years Marianne, you will go down as one of the all-time greats. But for heaven's sake find some more decent material. All most people know is your earlier stuff. Isn't there something that would better define you as an artiste?

Only one? If I was her I'd regret droning on about all this every chance she gets. Dreary old has-been!
