How the Darzi plans unfolded

July 2007: Lord Darzi publishes a report into the future of the NHS advocating super-specialist hospitals for patients with major illnesses, and polyclinics for those with less serious problems.
June 2008: Health bosses give the go-ahead for seven specialist stroke hospitals and six major trauma centres in London. They will be built by 2011.
September: The current urgent care services in London are described as inadequate in a damning report.
September: The first five polyclinics to open in London are revealed in Harrow, Hounslow, Lambeth, Redbridge and Waltham Forest. They will be built by next spring.
November: Plans to create a polyclinic at University College London hospital are scrapped after public protests.
