Straw: Raid was unusual

01.12.08

Justice Secretary Jack Straw added to Scotland Yard's pressures today when he said the Damian Green raid was "unusual".

Showing the concern felt at Cabinet level, he said people were "surprised by the nature of the raid" adding that: "The Home Secretary is very concerned about this." The furore has divided the Cabinet, with Commons leader Harriet Harman and Jacqui Smith seeming to differ. Ms Harman called for a review while Ms Smith showed no concern and refused to criticise Scotland Yard.

Downing Street refused to comment on the raids. The Prime Minister's spokesman suggested an inquiry might be held eventually. He said: "There may well be a time when it is right to look at the issues arising from this case."
