Who's in and who's out

Gideon Spanier
1 Dec 2008

Our annual magazine, The 1,000: London's Influential People, chronicles the powerbrokers and agenda-setters. However, influence can shift quickly in the capital. Gideon Spanier looks at who's in and who's out.

MAKING MOVES

Finance
John Kingman, 38
UKFI chief executive

One of the most powerful figures in banking as chief executive of the Government's newly created UK Financial Investments. Negotiated UKFI's huge stakes in Royal Bank of Scotland and HBOS.

C-CHARGE BUSTER

Running London
Boris Johnson, 44
Mayor

His decision to axe the western extension of the congestion charge is arguably the single biggest act of his mayoralty so far. Johnson's personal attack on Gordon Brown and his pre-Budget Report shows that the Mayor is keeping one eye firmly on the national stage.

NEW ON THE LIST

Sport
Ivan Gazidis, 44
Arsenal chief executive

Recruited from America's Major League Soccer, Gazidis has a brief to handle Arsenal's finances and fight off any possible takeover by a foreign investor. He will also have a hands-on role in player transfers and, in due course, finding a replacement for manager Arsene Wenger, who may be contemplating life after Arsenal.

UP AND COMING

Fashion
Louise Goldin, 29
Designer

Has just won the Emerging Talent prize at the British Fashion Awards. Goldin's degree collection was snapped up by Selfridges in 2005 and this autumn she launched her second capsule collection for Topshop.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Sport
Kevin Pietersen, 28
England cricket captain

The one-day matches against India did not go smoothly, losing five in a row despite scoring a century himself in the last game. Has been forced into the political spotlight, insisting that none of his players should have to return to India for this month's Test matches after the Mumbai terror attacks.

OFF THE LIST

Running London
Sir Ian Blair, 55
Ex-Met Commissioner

Deposed by Boris Johnson, Sir Ian is dropped from our list. The controversial commissioner boosted police numbers on the street and did a good job of tackling terrorism. But he is remembered for endless race rows and the tragic killing of Jean Charles de Menezes.
