A British artist is sure to win the coveted record of the year award at the US Grammys.

Britons swept the board in the category as shortlists were announced for the prizegiving in Los Angeles on 8 February.

Coldplay, nominated for Viva la Vida, face Adele (Chasing Pavements), Leona Lewis (Bleeding Love), MIA (Paper Planes) and Robert Plant for Please Read the Letter, his collaboration with American bluegrass artist Alison Krauss.

Coldplay were nominated for seven awards including Album of the Year (Viva la Vida) which they will contest with Radiohead (In Rainbows), Plant and Krauss (Raising Sand), Ne-Yo (Year of the Gentleman) and Lil Wayne, (Tha Carter III).

Rapper Lil Wayne was nominated eight times.

Brit school graduate Adele was shortlisted as best new artist along with Duffy, whose record Rockferry faces Leona Lewis's Spirit in the pop vocal album category.

Leona is actually writing her second album now, of course she wouldn't have written her first album! Plus she co-wrote a few songs on Spirit, which is impressive for someone who won a Reality TV show!

Duffy deserves to win 2 grammies for Best New Artist and best CD - ROCKFERRY. Adele should win Best Song for Chasing Pavements. At least these two girls write their own songs, as Amy Winehouse did last year when she won five, unlike Leona, who gets given them all, by Simon Cowell!
