Who's in and who's out

Evening Standard
8 Dec 2008

Our annual magazine, The 1,000: London's Influential People, chronicles the power-brokers and agenda-setters. However, influence can shift quickly in the capital. Gideon Spanier looks at who's in and who's out.

TOUGH TIMES

RETAIL
Kate Bostock, 52
M&S, executive director, clothing

Seen as a likely successor to boss Sir Stuart Rose — so recession is both a threat and an opportunity for Bostock. As shoppers desert upmarket brands, she hopes a series of “20 per cent off” one-day sales can boost sales figures.

NEW ENTRY

Finance
Roger Jenkins, 52
Barclays Private Equity, chief executive

Has twin roles at Barclays in charge of capital markets and Middle East investment banking. Helped broker £3.5 billion investment from the Gulf to prop up Barclays. Used his Mayfair home to co-host glitzy £200,000 Darfur fundraiser with actor George Clooney.

MAKING MOVES

Business
Peter Freeman, 60
Competition Commission, chairman

Flexing his muscles by delaying plans for video-download website Kangaroo, a joint venture between BBC, ITV and Channel 4. Freeman, a City poacher-turned- gamekeeper, is also keeping a beady eye on everything from supermarkets to insurance.

UNDER PRESSURE

Sport
Bernie Ecclestone, 78
Formula One supremo

Honda's decision to pull out of Formula One adds to Ecclestone's woes just as he faces the break-up of his marriage to statuesque wife Slavica. Ecclestone faces a battle to recruit new corporate backers in the current economic climate.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

MUSIC
Guy Hands, 49
Terra Firma, chief executive

Mixed fortunes for private equity chief who runs record label EMI and is celebrating his biggest band, Coldplay, receiving seven Grammy nominations. But Hands is having to part with Terra Firma executives as recession bites and the £3.2 billion purchase of EMI in 2007 looks steep.

UNDER PRESSURE

Running London
Sir Paul Stephenson, 55
Met Police, deputy commissioner

The acting boss of the Met may have damaged his hopes of succeeding Sir Ian Blair after the fiasco of the arrest of Tory MP Damian Green. Stephenson, admired by the Mayor's deputy, Kit Malthouse, had been considered a safe pair of hands, winning praise for his cool response to the 2005 terror attacks.
