Men guilty of burning girl with acid in sex assault

Paul Cheston, Courts Correspondent
9 Dec 2008

THREE men have been found guilty of raping a girl and then burning her by throwing acid in her face.

The three rapists subjected the 16-year-old with learning difficulties to the two-hour ordeal on 9 January. The girl had arranged to meet a man she knew to have sex with him in the hope of being liked. Instead she was met by Rogel McMorris, 18, whom she did not know, and he, Jason Brew, 19, and Hector Muaimba, 20, took her to an unoccupied house in Tottenham.

There they raped her and threw caustic soda in her face.

The police were called by a neighbour who heard her screams. She was taken to hospital with more than 50 per cent burns to her body. She is permanently scarred and still needs treatment.

After yesterday's conviction investigating officer Dc Alex Newton said: "These men preyed on a vulnerable girl. Their attitude in court has been disgusting. Some of them have been laughing and sniggering. They have no respect for anyone and I'm delighted at the convictions."

At Wood Green crown court McMorris, of Tottenham, was convicted of two counts of rape and GBH, Brew, also of Tottenham, one count of rape, and Hector Muaimba, of Walthamstow, also one count of rape. They will be sentenced next month.

I was so shocked and disgusted by this story, how brave this pack of animals where in their hunting, as this is exactly what they did and are, absolute scum!! I hope and pray that they will rot in jail, but not doubt that would be an infringement of their Human rights, never mind their poor victim. I despair of our countries pathetic non-justice system and really am scared how this world will be for the next generation !!

I think crimes of this magnitude should carry life sentences. Someone who is capable of such horrific acts should not be allowed out on bail either.

Why do I as a tax payer have to pay for the incarceration of this scum! Its not as if its a one off, you hear and read about this type of brutality every day (sneering defendants etc.,) What must be recognised is our legal system is soft, and, criminals must fear the mere thought of imprisonment.(Rehabilitation is something they can do in their own time after they have completed their sentence)

One of my friends was a juror on this case and she could not talk about it during the court process. During the trial she lost her confidence and became fearful on public transport but was unable to explain why.

Having read about it in the papers I can understand why this was so; especially as the young men were on bail during their trial.

I find it unbelievable that there is no reported remorse, and I am particularly saddened at the thought that there is so much violence available to young people in contemporary society at a time when they are not mature enough to have developed a social compass to replace the moral compass of yesteryear.

We need to take stock of this and the Baby P case and start to take our responsibilities up with regard to young people; otherwise in the vacuum of no personal and individual adult authority in their lives poor judgement will develop.

As adult members of society we can not continue to indulge ourselves that children know best, when clearly their experience is relatively limited. We need to show them by example how to behave as a society as a whole and teach them how best to contribute to social well being.

All too often, I myself am scared to intervene when a young person misbehaves, I think this is a lesson to us all to start to take responsibility for our youth; in this we need support from their parents and other people.

Together we can help build a better future for them and ourselves.

How do you know Britain is going to get worse, Steve? Are you a criminologist? There has always been crime, and evil people, and there always will be. If you're going to make a contribution to the debate at least have some evidence to back it up.

"What part of 'evil' behaviour did this cowardly 'judge' not understand when he 'sentenced' these gruesome monsters?"

What is this rant about, he has not sentenced them yet?

Vile disgusting low lifes - these men should be locked up for LIFE and be treated as they treated that poor defenceless girl - by having caustic soda thrown in their face. Castrating them would also be a suitable punishment, that way they would never be able to breed.

What part of 'evil' behaviour did this cowardly 'judge' not understand when he 'sentenced' these gruesome monsters?

And how the 'police' dare turn up to give their usual 'necessary' 'PR statement' wrapped up in their usual sympathetic waffle, is beyond me.

This 'gang' wouldn't exist, let alone be tollerated, if the police's 'policing' was anywhere near adequate.
Sack the Chief Constable.

One of the most revolting stories I have ever read. Shocked me to the core and made me feel physically sick.
I hope they are sentenced the maximum possible. This poor girl has now got to suffer as long as she lives. The punishment should be equal to the crime. Unfortunately, it never is.
What is wrong with the UK? Who needs terrorists with this lot, and their kind, roaming the streets?

I hope the sentence which will be a custodial one will reflect societys feelings by being especially long.

I trust they will receive a more numerically significant jail sentence for their awful crimes.
