Rebel MPs launch private inquiries into Green affair

Joe Murphy, Political Editor
09.12.08

SENIOR MPs today rebelled against the Government's handling of the Damian Green affair by moving to launch their own inquiries.

Up to three Commons select committees want to know why Scotland Yard failed to give explicit advice to the Commons that it could refuse to allow a police raid on the Tory frontbencher's office. They also want to ask Tory leader David Cameron whether any shadow ministers other than Mr Green met alleged mole Christopher Galley.

The Home Affairs Committee, the Standards and Privileges Committee and the Justice select committee all held talks today about holding probes of their own. Their talks come after the Government's attempt to set up a formal committee of inquiry dominated by Labour MPs collapsed with both Tories and Liberal Democrats boycotting it.

A senior Home Affairs Committee member told the Evening Standard: "The select committees would have kept out of it but the rules of the game changed when the Tories and Liberal Democrats decided to boycott the official committee."

This pathetic (borrow and spend and get into even more debt!)government carried the 'speakers committe' motion by 4 votes only, and that was with a 4 line whip. The Tories and Lib Dems are right to refuse to take part in a useless exercise that has become a Brown/Smith attempt to
once again stifle democracy. Just as Blair did on many occasions! It's a Labour Govt. trait.
After viewingreading all available information on this Damien Green issue, Mr Brown must really be stupid if he doesn't realise that a huge number of people throughout this country already can work out the truth of the matter. Mr Brown, you are consigned to the dustbin of jiggery-pokery!
