Who's in and who's out

Gideon Spanier
15.12.08

Our annual magazine chronicles London's power-brokers and agenda-setters. However, influence can shift quickly. Gideon Spanier looks at who's in and who's out.

NEW ON THE LIST

Media
Anthony Rose, 36
BBC iPlayer supremo

Masterminded the iPlayer's success and is about to launch a revamped version of the online TV service, which could soon become the industry standard. Has been promoted within the BBC to reflect his influence.

OFF THE LIST

Running London
David Ross, 43
Ex-Mayoral Olympic adviser

The co-founder of Carphone Warehouse resigned from the 2012 organising committee after using shares as collateral for property deals without informing City watchdogs. Ross has also had to resign a string of directorships because of the scandal.

MAKING MOVES

Film
Kate Winslet, 33
ACTRESS

Has been shortlisted twice for the Golden Globes, a good omen for the Oscars. Arguably the biggest British female star of her generation in Hollywood, Winslet's standing is boosted by her director husband, Sam Mendes, who filmed her in recent hit Revolutionary Road.

ON THE UP

Finance
Paul Tucker, 50
Director, Bank of England

Promoted to deputy governor from next year, he has been with the bank since 2002 and already has a key role in supervising financial markets. Tucker needs to help restore the bank's credibility, which has suffered because it was slow to cut interest rates in the face of recession.

ANYONE FOR TENNIS?

Sport
Roger Draper, 38
Chief executive, Lawn Tennis Association

The blunt-speaking LTA boss has just signed a new five-year deal after rumours he could be ready to quit. He wants more children to play tennis and claims there has been a surge in interest thanks to successes of Andy Murray and Laura Robson. Draper hasn't won friends by saying most tennis coaches aren't up to the job.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Education
Christine Gilbert, 58
Chief Inspector, Ofsted

Faces tough questions over her watchdog's handling of the Baby P case in Haringey — Ofsted gave the council a glowing report for its child services just a week after the boy died. Gilbert, who is married to London minister Tony McNulty, has a big remit that goes beyond schooling. MPs want her to shake up the watchdog — or else.

Hard to understand the fuss about Kate Winslet. She has basically two acting faces and that's it. No charisma, no style, just a moderately pleasant-looking, usually slightly plump English girl saying her lines. Odd.
