Postman mauled by rottweilers

A postman was being treated in hospital today after being attacked by two rottweilers while delivering Christmas mail.

The 30-year-old suffered "severe" arm injuries in the attack in Cambridge.

Royal Mail said the postman was making "steady progress" in Addenbrooke's Hospital and an "urgent investigation" had been launched.

The postman, who has not been named, was attacked in Trumpington shortly before 11am yesterday.

A police spokeswoman said "We have begun an investigation and statements are being taken. The dogs have been destroyed - voluntarily - by their owner."

Paramedics said the postman had been bitten on the arm and his injuries were "severe".

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said staff were "shocked" by the attack.

She said: "One of our postmen was taken to hospital after he was attacked by two dogs while out delivering in the Cambridge area yesterday. Thankfully, he is making steady progress in hospital today."

She said figures showed that there were about 5,000 dog attacks on postmen and women every year.

i dont understand why people are allowed to keep such dangerous animals in the first place.

there are plenty of breeds that are friendlier and pose less risk.

i regularly see rotweilers walking with their owners without a leed or a muzzle, which i find incredibly frightening. If one of these animals decided to attack me or my child there would be very little anyone, including the owner, could do to stop it.
