High street dominates internet

HIGH-street retailers dominated online sales on Boxing Day, figures show.
Next, which was the most searched for sale online, was forced to install a "virtual queue" for customers because of the unprecedented demand. The figures show Boxing Day was the busiest day for online retailers this year.
However, the credit crunch and shoppers' preference for going to the high streeover shopping online meant that sales were still down 4.9 per cent on last year.
"Many of the people searching for Boxing Day sales chose to hit the high street rather than buy online," said Robin Goad of web monitoring company Hitwise.
"People seem to be researching their purchases online, but actually going to the high street to make their purchases.
"I think people really want to see what they are buying. But the high-street names, rather than the online sellers like Play.com, really did dominate."
