A MAN has been arrested after four members of a family were hit by a car as they walked home in icy conditions.

A 44-year-old woman, a 48-year-old man and their two sons, aged seven and nine, were injured when a driver lost control of his Ford Mondeo, which then mounted a footpath in Camberley, Surrey.

The family were taken to Frimley Park Hospital. The nine-year-old, who suffered serious head injuries, was transferred to Kings College Hospital in London where he was said to be in a stable condition.

A spokesman for Surrey Police said: "A 44-year-old female was diagnosed with a broken pelvis. A 48-year-old male suffered suspected leg breaks and a broken finger. A boy aged nine years suffered abdominal injuries, serious head injuries and concussion and a boy aged seven years suffered a broken right leg and pelvic fractures."

Police today arrested a 31-year-old man for dangerous driving. He was bailed to appear at a police station in April. The driver was not injured.

Police have appealed for witnesses and are looking for anyone who saw the Mondeo being driven before the accident.

Residents of Prior Road in Camberley told today how they heard the driver shouting for help on Saturday night. One said the impact of the collision had thrown the nine-year-old boy into a nearby garden.

The resident said: "I ran out and the driver was in hysterics, shouting 'help, help!' The car was on its side and a young boy was unconscious underneath.

"When the paramedics helped him regain consciousness he couldn't stop screaming because he was in so much pain.

"The woman said she had two children but at first we could not work out where the other one was.We were looking under the car for him when one of the paramedics found him unconscious in the bushes. He had been thrown a good eight to 10 feet."
