Police accused over baton charge at embassy protest
Justin Davenport, Crime Correspondent05.01.09
DEMONSTRATORS have accused the Met police of heavy-handed tactics after they were charged in an underpass during the Gaza protest on Saturday.
Some told how they feared they were going to die when a crowd of hundreds panicked as they faced charging riot squad officers wielding batons.
Organisers of the demonstration have challenged police tactics of ordering protesters into the Piccadilly underpass as they walked from Trafalgar Square to the Israeli embassy in Kensington.
Police said that they had agreed to the march on condition it was properly policed but when it reached the underpass they claim violence broke out with some demonstrators trying to drag officers into the crowd.
Scotland Yard said officers made one "10-metre advance" into the crowd using "recognised and proportionate tactics". A spokesman added: "There were no police lines behind the group of protesters and at all times demonstrators could leave via the underpass back into Piccadilly."
Among several people injured was Asil Alrashidi, 23, a bank worker from Langley, Berkshire. She told the Guardian: "I was petrified. The riot police were charging and pushing people, hitting them with their batons."

None of you were there and have no idea what happened. This was a multicultural protest British, Arab, European, African, Asian ect ect. These people all live here and have every right to protest against the killing of hundreds of Palestinian civilians, and against the western governments that support it. The police used excessive violence on many peaceful demonstrators. That should concern every British person. Who knows when it will be your turn.

Im upset at the majority of these comments. This country is a democratic country where you can express your views peacefully, and this is exactly what these demonstrators where doing on03/01/09
In return they were attacked by riot police for no reason and held in a tunnel where there was a stampede, resulting in people being injured and many women and children petrified...where is the democracy in that!?!
The media was left outside the tunnel when this incedent happened and no one was there to report it, conveniently, so the truth will never appear. No one will know that there were old people amongst the protesters, young kids standing up for what massacre is going on in Gaza, I even saw a few pregnant ladies and disabled people. All of whom have the right to express their views without being almost buried alive in a tunnel.
So for people to call all the protesters 'foreign national idiots' I would urge that you go, do your research, and find out that British born and bred citizens are out demonstrating for justice.
As for the people that suggest using tear gas to silent the demonstrators, I urge you to go educate yourselves and research the situation, and see the cause the demonstrators are standing up for, and the injustice that is occurring.
Finally those that say that they are 'troublemakers' and 'all the same faces' please go out and see that at least 50,000 people were out on the streets of london, all the same faces? all trouble makers? I THINK NOT!!!

Why are we the only country stupid enough to put up with foreign nationals shouting the odds against other foreign nationals on the streets of OUR capital city?
What in God's name are these idiots doing? Who is this aimed at? This is the equivalent of Tesco staff marching into Morrisons to moan about Sainsbury's - an utter waste of time and yet again the taxpayer (as opposed to most of the fools in the crowd) is once again copping the bill for all this police overtime.
Next time, bring out the watercannons and wash these gobby morons away.

Democracy is dead we killed it! All of us killed it! We sat silently and watched it die! Because we could not see it! All we could see was the right of self determination being taken away from people of another race we did not care for! Little did we know that among the writhing corpses democracy lay dying... and we left her alone at her last moment! The day will come when our rights are taken by our own governments and we will not be able to protest on the street, but we could not see it coming because that kind of thing only happens to foreigners we demonise & care nothing for! They deserve to be beaten with batons, and with bigoted eyes we cannot see democracy is dead and we killed it!

Leave our police alone. They have enough to contend with without keeping these thugs out of our cities. Don't know how they put up with them. Perhaps they should disperse them by using tear gas like they do in other European countries, i.e. Greece. That should clear them out so they won't come back for more.

Demonstrators pulling officers into te crowd? really? sounds highly highly unlikely.

"demonstrators trying to drag officers into the crowd." If this is true then the police have every right to defend themselves. Well said Eddie!

You really shouldn't believe everything the Police say. Don't you remember the press releases just after they'd shot De Menezes.

I was at that tunnel frightened for my life. I am not a muslim or an Arab so my only affliation with the region is humanity and it was on that basis I went to the demo. I have not seen anyone causing trouble until the police started to charge into the crowed. It saddens me deeply that the plight of Palestinians is bandled together with "Islamic Terrorism" as most of the comments here suggests. People with this prejudiced attitude need to do some soul-searching.

PLEASE DON'T ARM THE BRITISH POLICE!!! They are incompetent enough as they are, by arming them we'll only cause more bloodshed to be spilt.
Then we the protesters will be forced to protect ourselves from the unnecessary heavy handed responses of the police at peaceful demonstrations.
The police are inept and incompetent enough already and to supply them with tools with which to create further injury and suffering, than what they are already capable of inflicting.
It would be better to demand that the arms supplying countries STOP supplying both sides. Thus hopefully they might get around a table and hash out some sensible and acceptable agreement. Barricading the main transgressor would be justified.

The same was said of the tactics used against the Countryside Alliance protestors, and there was plenty of evidence to support the allegations of excessive force against a group who, unlike this rentamob, were predominantly British. But, for that same reason, no one gave a toss, so why should we now?
I noticed that may of these demonstrators were sporting bandanas and placards denouncing the West and supporting Islamist terrorists. Why do we have to put up with these people? No one else does.

We agree with Eddie. They are always demonstrating about something or other. If it wasn't this, it would be something else. Truth is, they are permanently offended. Israel have every right to protect their people, and if they want Israel to back off, then they need to stop fireing rockets. And as a footnote - why are they here at all? Oh of course, we are pushovers, and our parties need their vote's. What a great future we have in store.

ahhh poor rent a mob. As if we give a damn for them.
- Grim Reaper, Hell
Well done the police. If you notice its always the same faces at these demonstations - Benn, Galloway & Livingstone. Haven't they got anything better to do..........
- Jonny, London
Couldn't have said it better myself Eddie!

Let's get this straight. This rabble of troublemakers are getting over excited and nationalistic for a country they chose to leave in the first place.
I've no sympathy for them and really feel for the police.
