Hamas 'ready for ceasefire' to end 20-day Gaza conflict
Martin Bentham, Home Affairs Editor16.01.09
HAMAS was today reported to be ready to call a ceasefire within the next 24 hours as Israel declared that the Gaza conflict was nearing its "final act".
Sources said the Palestinian militant group was prepared to stop fighting if five key conditions, including an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and the reopening of border crossings, were met.
At the same time, Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev confirmed that an end to military operations could be close as his country and the US continued to negotiate details of a plan for stopping the smuggling of weapons into Gaza from Egypt.
That would address the key Israeli concern that Hamas should not be allowed to use any suspension of hostilities to re-arm and raised hopes that the basic elements of a long-term peace deal were beginning to fall into place.
"Hopefully we're in the final act," Mr Regev added.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports suggested that a "time out" from the 20-day conflict - which has claimed more than 1,000 Palestinian lives - could begin tomorrow, leading to a two-week truce that would be used to agree the details of a one-year ceasefire and an eventual permanent peace deal.
Israeli aircraft launched about 40 air strikes across Gaza today, targeting smuggling tunnels, a rocket launcher, and a mosque used to store arms.

Keith lonsdale Doncaster, Agree with your post, it so unfortunate that in this day and age we still have so many naive and ignorant people who pass comments without looking into the facts. I am not Muslims but I do read Quran.

The world must know that there are no victors and no vanquists in this 20 day war, rather it shows that "jaw jaw is better than war war".

Sometimes you Jewish aplogists for the behavior of your government seem to me to be lacking in logic. You have between yourselves managed by you greedy ways to destroy the international banking system and want us tax payers to bail you out.
Then you go and commit genocide and then you want us to believe you are victoms, please, grow up we don't believe you any more get it?
Please do not go into the 2000 year history of your tribe, I have an equally beguilling and long lasting one in Wales and England, the difference is I realise when enough is enough and you have to appreciate people for being people however awful they are. You are sowing the seeds of your own destruction and quite honestly why should people care if you are destroyed by your own arrogence?

Would someone please tell me why the media is not writing about the push for oil by the Zionists that is off the coast of Gaza and that they want to steal from the Palestinians?
Would someone also like to read their history books on the Israelis terrorist campaign against the British in 1947/8; when they bombed the St David's Hotel killing 91 British or the hanging of 2 British soldiers by the Israeli Terrorist organisation the Irgun. Or when the Zionists sent their killing squads to Europe and were going to assassinate the British PM and Bomb Westminster.
Is Gerald Kaufman, a member of the Jewish Labour movement linked to Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s ruling party, wrong to call for an arms embargo against Israel?
In 1946 the British security services issued this warning:”Members of the Stern group are now being organised and are under training. It is expected that they will be sent to the United Kingdom to assassinate important members of his majesty’s government, particularly, Mr Bevin.”- Released files from Security Services.
According to Israel’s Haaretz newspaper, farmers trapped in their homes during the first phase of the ground offensive were gunned down if they attempted to flee or were caught searching for food- is this Israel the victim?
Read and search for yourselves instead of being brainwashed by our controlled media.
Israel has an army, airforce and navy; tanks, planes, UAVs (used for assassinations and a weapons defence shield on land and at sea!!!!!!!!!!

Of course Hamas are ready for a ceasefire. The IDF has been hurting them significantly. They need time to regroup and re-arm. These are people who are going to continue as before as soon as they are able. Israel is attempting to make sure this isn't going to happen for a while.
A word to the apologists for Hamas - Israel targets armed fighters with the regretted 'collateral damage' of hitting some civilians. Hamas targets anyone and everyone, with intention of killing anyone they can.
Support Hamas and you support indiscriminate slaughter.

Your rant is the most distorted attempt at re-writing history I have read for some time. Israel is not at war with the whole of the Palestinian people. They are specifically at war with Hamas, a universally recognised terror supporting organisation. For example, Israel are not at war with President Abbas, the democratically elected leader of the whole of the Palestinian people, who are living in relative peace with Israel right across the West Bank. Hamas hate what President Abass, and his Fatah party stand for, as much as they hate Israel. Yes, the people of Gaza voted for Hamas candidates at the 2006 elections. But since then Hamas has murdered, intimidated and used violence to force from Gaza any remaining supporters of President Abass's Fatah party. The general population of Gaza are being cowered into complete submission by Hamas, who are treating them in exactly the same way as those under the totalitarian regime of Robert Mugabe. Hamas will not tolerate any opposition to their rule. In 2005 Israel ended 38 years of military rule in Gaza so that the Gaza Palestinians could hold local elections and form their own Government. To avoid future potential conflicts Israel also forcibly removed Jewish settlers from Gaza, then bulldozed their homes. Israel has no further interest in occupying any part of Gaza. But with government comes responsibility, but Hamas want to prolong this conflict as a diversion for their own murderous rule in Gaza.

Has everybody forgotten that the largest part of Palestine was ceded to the Jordanian royal family.
Why aren't the 'aggrieved and displaced Palestinians' launching their missiles at Jordan?
Could it be because the Israelis have turned their country into a wealthy and prosperous nation and Jordan hasn't?
Have a look at the area on Google Earth and see the difference!

I do wish that Israel's detractors would do at least a little historical research, instead of just regurgitating the left-liberal garbage espoused by the BBC and the Guardian.
The Israelis occupy nothing that wasn't given to them by international agreement in 1923. After WW1 the British mandate of Palestine consisted of what is now Israel and modern Jordan. The 75% of this land that lies to the east of the Jordan was renamed Transjordan, and given over to Arab control. The 25% that was left was still called Palestine, but was established as a Jewish homeland.
Not satisfied with this, the Arabs that remained in Palestine (Israel) decided to rise up against the Jews in an attempt to eject them. The Jews obviously fought back and the result was the further partition of this land, by the UN, with the Jews being ejected from lands granted to them in 1923. The Israelis accepted this, but the Arabs rejected it and took arms against the Jews in 1948. And so the Arab-led fight to expunge the Jews from Israel has continued ever since, supported by left wing revisionists and the historically ignorant.
As for the Arab mantra that Israel is "expansionist"- The Arab states of the Middle East occupy approximately 640 times the area of Israel and their population outnumbers that of the Jews by around 50-1.

To our Zionist visitor from New York... "military units" - Hamas is made up of people, it does not have any military installations and is made up of people who move around. Would it be OK for Palestinians to launch weapons at, say, a military installation in Israel which is hits killing hundreds but also kills hundreds of civilians which is merely "collateral damage"?
And Israel broke the truce killing several Palestinians in November (look it up). The bottom line is that Israel has been an occupying force for over 40 years, remains in the West Bank and legally remains in occuption of Gaza as it sealed off the borders months ago and did not allow medical supplies in and in November stopped aid agencies bringing in food, yes, that's FOOD. These are not the actions of a nation that wants peace. If it just implemented the UN resolutions requiring it to withdraw to 1967 borders there would be a huge chance of peace... and the money the EU gives to the Palestinians is dwarfed by te $114 billion that the US has given Israel since WWII.

Advice for Hamas: No more rockets = opening borders, reconstruction, no more war, peace, simple really!
Hamas have attempted to create an uninhabitable zone of increasing size within the legal borders of a sovereign state, by firing missiles at civilian population centres within Israel, for the last 8yrs.
Over the last eight years, Israel has tried negotiation, unilateral withdrawal, economic sanctions, targeted airstrikes against Hamas military targets, negotiated ceasefires and now finally a ground operation to convince Hamas to stop firing missiles at its citizens.
Would France allow Languedoc (in southern France) to be made impossible to live in by Basque separatists? No.
Israel does not want to destroy the Palestinians.
It has clearly stated it wants peaceful co-existence.
Hamas & its backers have clearly stated that they want Israel totally destroyed.
The irony is that the 1.5million Arabs living in Israel are not persecuted and have greater prosperity and freedom than Arabs in the rest of the Mid-East.
The evening news often show Israelis anguished over the loss of civilian life in Gaza, and against the concept of war, but desparate for respite from the 8yrs of missiles.
I have yet to see a single Palistinian show regret for even one of those missiles over the last 8yrs and the destruction that the missiles have brought to Israel and now to themselves.
Gazans have a simple choice to make - ongoing war with Israel or peace and prosperity.

The Palestinian Authority has been given millions (possibly billions) of dollars from Europe, the USA, Asia, and the smallest amount (if any) from other Arab countries as has UNWRA (only the Palestinians have an ENTIRE UN agency. All other global conflict areas have to make do sharing the services of UNHCR which is definitely "disproportionate"). Hamas has made it clear in all its statements that it will settle for nothing less than the entire destruction of Israel and the killing of all Jews. Fatah still calls for the removal of Jews from Israel. Why is no one asking what Egypt is doing to alleviate the situation (which, after the collapse of the Ottoman empire and the agreement of the British who then occuppied it, controlled Gaza before Israel..IT WAS NEVER PALESTINIAN LAND)? Egypt shuts its border with Gaza out of fear of the terrorist Islamist group Hamas (and its own Muslim brotherhood which is linked with Hamas). Hamas has openly admitted to using "human shields" as well as calling for the killing of Israelis and Jews globally. Hamas attacks its own people (Arabs) if they are Fatah supporters and/or Christians (many Christians have been forced to flee Gaza). Why is no one reporting these crimes?

And does that money reach the Palestinians?? no
why? because Israel doesn't allow it.

All i have heard is how Isreal is defending itself , considering the sanctions the Isreali government have implemented on Gaza , as a form of collective punishment for the last few years , how can you expect the Palastinians to sit by after decades of torment from these occupiers. If Isreal wants peace they could have allowed this years ago. By manipulating the truth and trying to hide the attrocites it is committing and has committed to a weak and impovrished population in the gaza strip and the west bank doesn't make it right . Isreal has since its birth looked only for the complete eradication of the palestinians and its peoples right to a free state. History hasn't taught them a thing but one thing i know is history repeats its self . Palestine is Palestinian land and the Isrealis' are really only our guests .

Palestine must be sanctioned and punished for the war crimes they committed,if they were any other country there would, so no more special treatment. Boiccott all Paestinian products (do they make anything except rockets?)
Stop the silly money they get given every year, they def dont deserve a penny.

UN agencies like UNWRA should be overhauled to stop them turning a blind eye to militants being hired and other militants being allowed into their compounds to carry out non-UN activities (like firing weapons, even if they claim it is in self-defence).

A one year truce is not worth anything. The six month truce was broken frequently by HAMAS. The only solution is the removal of HAMAS from the Gaza strip and the replacement of them with a group that can be a partner for peace and provide the Gazan's with the economic prosperity they need. Leaving HAMAS in place will just see this conflict kick off again in a year's time.
