30,000 workers on 2012 site

UP to 30,000 workers will be needed on the Olympic Park, giving a major short-term boost to the jobs market, Games organisers said today.

The Olympic Delivery Authority said the workforce of 3,315 would increase dramatically this year and would reach a peak of 11,000 next year.

A total of 30,000 people will have worked on the project by 2012, the ODA forecasts. Jobs created this year will include bricklayers, wood workers, electricians, engineers, plumbers and scaffolders, as well as administrators.

One third are from overseas but the ODA stressed nearly two thirds were from the London area.

Olympics chiefs said they would create 250 new apprenticeships on top of an existing 2,000 already planned.

How many of these people will be employed on a 'Cards in basis'and how many ( Probably the majority ) will be employed on a temporary basis through agencies and other types of bogus self employment?

"One third are from overseas but the ODA stressed nearly two thirds were from the London area".
And I don't suppose those two thirds are what I would call born and bred Londoners.

Seem to recall Brown having a policy of British jobs for British workers. Usual spin.
I understand union officials were horrified to find a foreign company responsible for a major construction contract in this country was insisting on using Spanish workers.
I agree with Jean & Maggie but think there is little chance that we will be told how many jobs will be filled by British workers.

Yes, I agree, these large companies ship the workers in from abroad because they are cheaper. My brother in law who is an electrician and has always worked in construction has been out of work for 4 months, lets see if he can get one of these so called jobs.

Will any of these jobs be for British works, or will they be shipped in from Poland. Contracts given to French to build the power stations who sub let to Spanish who import Polish workers no British need apply. Shame on the Government not protecting jobs in this country for the British workers.
