Who's in and who's out

Gideon Spanier
19 Jan 2009

Our annual magazine chronicles London's power-brokers and agenda-setters. However, influence can shift quickly. Gideon Spanier looks at who's in and who's out.

POLITICS

SHRITI VADERA, 45
BUSINESS MINISTER

Ex-UBS banker landed herself in hot water after she claimed she saw the “green shoots” of recovery — an explosive claim when the Government may have to recapitalise the banks again. Vadera's influence comes from her closeness to Gordon Brown. Civil servants call her Shriti “the Shriek”.

NEW ON THE LIST

FILM
DANNY BOYLE, 52
DIRECTOR

Trainspotting and Shallow Grave film director is enjoying a renaissance with his multi-award-winning Slumdog Millionaire, now tipped for Oscar and Bafta glory. Manchester-born Boyle will have the pick of directing projects here and in Hollywood.

MAKING MOVES

BUSINESS
COLIN MATTHEWS, 52
BAA CHAIRMAN

The boss of the airport authority that runs Heathrow is celebrating after the Government backed the controversial decision for a third runway. The battle is not over but the lobbying seems to have paid off for Cambridge-educated Matthews, a skiing and sailing fan.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

RUNNING LONDON
JUSTIN KING, 47
MAYOR'S LOCOG REPRESENTATIVE

The Sainsbury's chief executive, who is seeing sales rise in the downturn, is also the Mayor's new representative on the 2012 organising committee — replacing David Ross. King is vowing to use his retail savvy to improve the “customer experience” for Olympic spectators.

OFF THE LIST

FOOD
JAMAL HIRANI, 41
RESTAURATEUR

Ugandan-born Hirani is set to quit his Tiffinbites empire which has narrowly avoided going into administration, seven months after he bought the Bombay Bicycle Club chain. The former M&S lingerie buyer found business tough, particularly as his company was heavily involved in supplying lunches to City workers.

UP AND COMING

FILM
REBECCA HALL, 26
ACTRESS
The daughter of Sir Peter Hall jokes she has been “up and coming” for years but now has two big films out — Frost/Nixon and Vicky Cristina Barcelona. She's been shortlisted for a Bafta rising star award and is working on a Sam Mendes/Kevin Spacey collaboration with the Old Vic in Manhattan.
