Cameron forces Commons vote on Heathrow

DAVID Cameron today stepped up the battle against a third runway at Heathrow by staging a Commons showdown over the expansion plans.
The Tory leader has called a Commons debate next Wednesday on the issue.
Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon has refused to allow a vote on a third runway, angering many MPs.
But the Conservatives put aviation policy at the top of the agenda by opting for a debate - and a vote - on it next week, rather than other pressing issues such as the economy.
Shadow transport secretary Theresa Villiers said: "Because the Government has run away from a vote, we will be using our parliamentary time to allow one to take place."
Ministers face a potential backbench revolt but Tory insiders doubt whether the Government will be defeated. About 50 Labour MPs are openly opposed to expansion, and several ministers will be put on the spot over their opposition.
However, the Conservatives are also divided, with about 30 MPs and even members of the frontbench privately supporting the move. It is not yet clear if they will rebel.
Liberal Democrat transport spokesman Norman Baker said: "This is a test of David Cameron's commitment to the environment."
Meanwhile Boris Johnson has warned that a fourth runway could be built if a third goes ahead.
The Mayor said expansion was unlikely to stop at current plans. He also said he would fight the move by launching a legal battle with councils.
Mr Johnson was speaking at a People's Question Time in Hayes, near Heathrow.

Great. Heathrow should be closed not rewarded - the aiport is a hellhole for the passengers who don't want to go through the shopping hell ordeal. Security is a disaster as well it is all about shops shops shops and I want to fly fly fly and not walk walk walk... London deserves a new airport!
