They are the body's master cells and have the ability to grow into any type of tissue.
Where do they come from?
They are only found in early-stage embryos. The embryos to be used in the trial were given by IVF patients who had some left over after treatment.
Why are stem cells controversial?
When the stem cells are extracted, the embryos are destroyed. This is opposed by those who believe embryos have the same right to life as people.
How big is the trial?
It will involve eight to 10 people with severe spinal cord injuries. Later trials would involve more people.
How long before the treatment is widely available?
If the trials go well, in three to five years a therapy could become available.
