Hitches during revamp delay Savoy reopening

Evening Standard

THE £100million restoration of the Savoy Hotel has been hit by a series of delays. The 120-year-old hotel was due to reopen in May but it has now been put back until autumn.

Fairmont, the Canadian company which manages the Savoy, began the 18-month project - the most expensive renovation in British hotel history - in December 2007. The hotel will partially reopen with 160 rooms, the front hall, the Savoy Grill and the largely unchanged American Bar, in the summer.

Designer Pierre-Yves Rochon is director of works. The transformation includes reopening the River Restaurant, closed eight years ago. A spokeswoman for Fairmont said: "I don't think there is one specific reason for the delay, it is just one of those things that happens with projects of this size."
