A royal golly apology

05.02.09

The royal family has been caught up in the race row after a shop at Sandringham was found to be selling golliwog dolls.

The toys have been available for more than a year but Buckingham Palace only became aware of them after the furore provoked by Carol Thatcher. The 12-inch dolls priced at £9.99, have now been withdrawn from sale.

A spokesman said: “The management of the shop have said they did not intend to offend anyone by selling this product and have apologised. The shop will immediately review its purchasing policy.”

What is the big deal - why can't these be sold? I can't see what the problem is - I remember these toys as a child. What offence do they cause?
