Senate softens ‘Buy American’ bill

Paul Thompson
05.02.09

The US Senate has voted to water down a “Buy American” plan in Barack Obama's $900 billion economic stimulus package after warnings it could spark a trade war. A clause in the bill had sought to ensure only US iron, steel and manufactured goods were used in projects it funded.

The President expressed concern this could make the US appear protectionist. Senators last night approved an amendment requiring the bill to comply with trade agreements with Canada and the EU.

The House of Representatives is yet to vote on the change.
