Parents warned to avoid teacher sacked
Robert Mendick and Peter Dominiczak17 Feb 2009
Parents and pupils at a London primary school where Boris Johnson sends his children have been warned not to approach a sacked teacher.
Canonbury Primary School is in turmoil following the dismissal of the drama and class teacher Robert Stringer, 56. He was ordered off school premises in Islington within two hours of Canonbury being contacted by a previous employer. The children of former Schools Minister Lord Adonis also attend the school.
The Standard can reveal Mr Stringer was subject to a police investigation at Field End Junior School in Ruislip, from which he resigned last year.
The inquiry was prompted by a parent's complaint that he showed Shakespeare In Love, which includes sex scenes and nudity, to children as young as seven in his drama club. The case against Mr Stringer was later dropped by police who found no evidence that any crime had been committed. However, Hillingdon council has passed details of his behaviour to the Independent Safeguarding Authority.
The ISA was set up after the murders of Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells in Soham in 2002, to “prevent unsuitable people from working with children”.
In a letter sent to parents on the day Mr Stringer was sacked from Canonbury on 16 January, joint acting headteachers Michelle Bahn and Lisa Horton wrote: “At this point we would recommend strongly that parents and children should not make or have any contact with Mr Stringer.”
Mr Stringer today told the Standard he refuted all allegations made against him and said he had been the victim of a hostile campaign.
Mr Stringer said: “The initial event at Field End that led to all of this was me showing the drama club a Shakespeare film. Two children's parents said the film had inappropriate material in it and they complained. This was two sets of parents out of a drama club of 50 children. After that, it all just spiralled out of control. A lot of these claims were manufactured against me. I had 250 letters of support and there were various petitions to support me.
“The police investigated and dropped the allegations completely. I left Field End because I had serious health issues at the time. It was my own decision to leave.”
The parent who complained to the school after his eight-year-old daughter watched Shakespeare In Love, said: “I raised it with Mr Stringer directly and he was very, very arrogant about the matter. He said he would write me a letter of apology but he would continue to show the film. I said don't bother about the apology I will take it further.”
In a statement, Scotland Yard said it had investigated Mr Stringer over his behaviour but concluded no criminal offence had taken place.
Mr Stringer had been employed on a temporary basis in September to run Canonbury's after-school drama club one night a week, but in November was employed full-time as a year six teacher and drama club leader. His sacking follows the suspension in October of Canonbury's headteacher Jay Henderson over allegations of “unprofessional behaviour”. Mr Henderson's suspension is currently under investigation. The school refused to discuss the matter.
Islington council said the two incidents were not related. Parents have not been told why Mr Stringer was sacked or Mr Henderson suspended.

Not sure i would want my two daughters watching a 15 certificate film at such a young age...but he is a drama teacher, and shakespeare is a large part of that! Some of you that are saying you are glad you don't live near him which to me, you are almost suggesting he abused children!! clearly this isn't the case, he made a minor mistake which has been completely taken the wrong way. You see worse on the TV!! christ! we cant walk down the street without someone getting the wrong idea about something!....we have all become "drama queens!" I have never seen the film, but might now just to see what the fuss is about. some of you are asking us to open our eyes?? why? most of us don't know him we just know what's been said and that's all. and for those of you that do, its obvious he was a good teacher so leave the poor guy alone.!!!

I am an x field end student and i also watched the film. I thought it was not so bad and i know that Mr Stringer should have given out slips but he didn't. It is only one mistake. Lots of people do this but it has not gone as far as this. At field end i have been tort by him and he has given me a lot of confidence in acting and other subjects. I don't understand why he had to be sacked anyway. I think it is stupid to let go of this great teacher and now you have let go of a great friend. Field end has done something similer to this. They have some times not handed out slips for a 12 or 15, but it has not gone this far. he has no job and has no where to go and he is only 54(I think).
I think some people have let down field end and now people have let down him.

A lot of you obviously cant read, it was 2 sets of parents that complained !!!!! I am one of them. Teresa not quite sure if you dig was at myself but my kids are fine going to that school please dont feel sorry for them, they are well loved, cared for and protected against narrow minded idiots like yourself. He made a few mistakes not just one, he would not get sacked for just showing a movie, I have the right to say what i want my daughter to see and at 8 i dont want her to see sex, especially with a man i dont know, he was her teacher and i trusted him. I have not accused him of anything and he knew that!!! Parents have a right to stand up for their kids, at some point in all of your lives you have complained about something at school whether it be what another child has said or done or an educational problem please do not try and point the finger at myself or the other parents we were doing our duty!!Please by all mean make yourself known to me and maybe we can discuss what has gone on .

I think that it's absurd that this teacher was suspended, as children as young as 7 probably do not know what is going on in the film, and there's yr 6's learning about sex ed. Jay being suspended was bad enough, but this is simply ridiculous. I used to go to the school, and stuff like this has never happened before, and the people who suspended Jay and dismissed the drama teacher need to pull their socks up and start thinking straight.

I know the parent who accused this teacher with this situation and she is very highly strung and i wouldn't consider her a responsible parent. This teacher should not have shown this film but an enormus amount of fuss has been made over what can only be described as a very silly mistake. Instead of all of this publicity an apology should have been all that was needed. Although knowing this parent she probably enjoyed the fuss and all the attention and an apology wouldn't have been enough for her. I feel really sorry for the headteacher who has been put in an impossible position and i feel the most sorry for the children of this parent who complained because it must be very difficult for them to go to that school now.

if you were to ask me which teacher out of my entire school experience was the most memorable- it would be, without a doubt, Mr Stringer. He enabled me to build my confidence greatly and he was always 100 per cent devoted to his work as a teacher. I feel privelaged to have been taught by such a wonderful man and i am very sad that he has been treated this way...those responsible for this should be ashamed of themselves and as they say, the worst things happen to the nicest people.

I am a former student and have attended his drama club for over six years, in which time he has improved my confidence greatly and instilled in me a love of Shakespeare and of drama as a whole. He was always enthusiastic and had our education and best interests at heart. Mr Stringer is passionate about drama and as a result of this the many students who have worked with him have gained a great understanding and love of Shakespeare.
The negative comments being left on here, not only affect Mr Stringer but also the many students who have been privileged to work with him. I am fully supportive of him and incredibly grateful for everything he has done for me over the years, he is an inspiration and many of my proudest moments are those on stage in his productions.

What a ridiculous over-reaction to one incident in a lifetime devoted to teaching children which should not destroy Robert Stringer's life. My nieces and their friends were taught by this man and all adored him. He is one of the rare teachers who is remembered fondly for the rest of his pupil's lives. The phrasing of this news report is inflamatory and the words in the letter from the school to parents seem to be a kneejerk reaction to one-sided information passed to them from by a vindictive ex-colleague. Are you hiring a lawyer Robert to remind people of the phrase 'innocent till proven guilty'?

I think it's absolutely appalling what has happened to Mr.Stringer. He is an excellent teacher with high standards, his career & future have been ruined. I believe that the parents took this to far and set out to destroy him, after all what damage has been done appart from Mr. Stringers reputation being in tatters. These parents sure got what they wanted & I also believe so did some of the teachers. I also speak on behalf of both my daughters who he taught. Chin up Mr. Stringer you are an innocent man!!! & we all love you.

I am a former Field Ender, and after reading this article, and all the comments made, I don't know whether to be angry or ashamed. I had Mr Stringer as my Maths teacher when I was in FEJS and I learnt SO MUCH. Before year 6, when I was in his maths class, I wasn't that good at maths, and I wasn't very confident either. After one year with him, I was completely different. And, do you know what? I haven't needed to learn that much more since being in secondary school. I've been her for 4 years, and have only had about 2 new things introduced to me. He went through the whole school syllabus and more in that one year.
This case is ridiculous, and yes, maybe showing the film without permission wasn't the best thing do, but people are allowed to make mistakes, aren't they?
'The case against Mr Stringer was later dropped by police who found no evidence that any crime had been committed.'
NO CRIME HAS BEEN COMMITTED.What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty. And he's been proven innocent.
Mr Stringer was the best teacher that FEJS ever had. It used to be an excellant school, but now I'm not so sure, especually considering that this man's life has been destroyed for no apparent reason.
Mr Stringer has many friends, and many, many people out there that support him, and I hope he knows that. We won't give up and we hope he doesn't to. I hope you all realise what this man has done for me, and all of his other students, and the amount he cares for all of us.

Mr Stringer was a fanastic teacher to my daughter she also became part of the drama club and gained so much knowledge about Shakespeare, she grew in confidence as did many of the children, and gained highest sats results I feel partly due to his teaching skills. Mr Stringer was supported by many of the Year 6 parents when this first happened. Many wrote to the local authority in support of him and his Drama club. It is unfair that something which has been fully investigated and no case found can be used against him. I question the actions of the former employers, perhaps this has become a personal vendeter against him?

Mr. Stringer is a very well respected drama teacher. His career should not have been ruined by a film. A film I as a mother of 2 drama club members have shown my own children. This film was shown due to work being done on Shakespeare. As a class teacher I find he will be irreplaceable. The loss of great teachers like Robert Stringer should not be allowed to happen. In the long run it is the children that suffer and a totally innocent man suffers today. Our thoughts are with Robert and his family.

This is turning into some sort of Kafka-esque farce. Robert Stringer have the support of the vast majority of the parents at Field End Junior school, and this affair caused a great deal of anger both towards the School Administration and the Governors of the school.
Robert made a single error of showing Shakespeare in Love (obviously a very corrupting film, I hope someone has told Gywnnie P), as a wind down after one of the regular Drama Club productions of a full-uncut Shakespeare Play (for 10 year olds, lets face it, how many senior schools can say they do that).
This did not cause a problem for all except one of the parents, who has rather strongly held christian beliefs.
Two of our children have been to the School drama club, and have enjoyed and grown throught the experience.
Now it seems that an excellent teacher will be hounded out of the profession through over-zealous and in-appropriate application of the rules.
A crying shame and absolutely farcical.

The whole situation has been blown completely out of context. Yes he did make a mistake, ONE mistake, which has cost him a career that was his life. I have known Mr. Robert Stringer for years as a parent and a friend, and I must say I'm glad to be able to call myself both. He was a brilliant teacher who help my daughter in every way that only a brilliant teacher does. Every year parent begged for their children to be taught by him. The whole school love him and he gave all he's free time to work with the children in a drama club that had kids putting on Shakespear play in their full, to see my daughter know every word of 'Midsummers Dream' and enjoy all Shakespears work at the age of 7+ was wonderful, as well as giving her the confidence to stand on stage and act to everyone was brilliant and all this is thanks to Mr Stringer. Everyone that knows he will speak as I do as he is a much loved teacher that changes lives for the better.
It is a shame that a great teacher is misunderstood like this for doing such a great job. I'm glad my daughter and I had the chance to work with him and I would love to work with him again in the future.

I am in sheer disbelief that this issue has become bigger than necessary. I was a student of Mr Stringer for many years and was also in his drama club. This man is the best teacher I have ever had! He only ever puts his students first and if you knew him, you would most certainly say the same. I would even go as far to say that he has helped me become who I am today! He builds confidence in his students and always encouraged them to do their best. His drama classes were amazing and I find it a raw talent to be able to teach students of 8 years old such intense literature and to appreciate it. This man is truly inspirational and I cannot believe that students are now being deprived of his outstanding teaching abilities. I do understand the parents concerns about showing Shakespeare in Love because of some inappropriate scenes, but I honestly believe that Mr Stringer only intended to broaden the students knowledge and understanding. As many of you will know, Shakespeare is an influential writer and in order to understand his work, it is important to understand his life events- which is why Mr Stringer would of shown this film. Ask yourself if it is appropriate for your children to be learning about knife crime and abduction so often featured on the news. I'm shocked and appalled that so many of you judge this man without knowing how wonderful he really is! At 20 yrs old, I still have not forgotten the inspirational Mr Stringer! He taught both my children excellently over a four year period during school in the after school drama club and then another four years after they had left Field End School at his junior drama club - he gave them loads of confidence from being shy people to being very outgoing. He taught them execellent Shakespeare that has helped my daugher through exams at her secondry school. He was an excellent teacher and perhaps people should look at the way he has kept more than 50 children at a time off the streets and street corners. They still belong now to his new Drama Club and I would never ever have thought that anyone or person would ever judge his ability of looking after and teaching these children. He has done a magnificent job and I wouldn't want any other teacher to teach my children the way he did.So open your eyes to the one's that don't know him and don't JUDGE HIM BY WHAT YOU READ.!

I would like to register my support for the parents who complained against the fact that this film had been shown to children of this age group. I know personally that they have not in any way acted out of anything but love for their children and the need to protect them from things that are clearly not suitable for their age range. I too would have complained very strongly if this film was shown to my child. Fortunately he had left Mr Stringers Drama group a term earlier or I would have been in their position. Mr Stringer also taught my son for a year in an important subject. On leaving this school I have since discovered that my son learnt virtually nothing during this year! Mr Stringer may have made a mistake but he has no-one to blame but himself for the outcome. Remorse was not shown at anytime . I would like to know how another school employed this man with his history in the first place, did he not tell them or was it ignored?! I would also like to comment on the former colleague of Mr Stringers comments. This person has obviously been teaching children too. Whilst their support is worrying so it the fact that he or she can't spell Shakespeare or associated to name just two errors, if you look closely there are many more! What does this say for the state of the Education System in Britain. He should not be allowed to teach again. I hope that the parents who found his behaviour unacceptable are fully supported by the school as they have not done anything wrong.

I cannot believe some of the comments written. If you knew the facts you would think twice before defending a man that clearly should not be working with children. Open your eyes, what kind of decent man would feel it acceptable to show a 15 rated film to children of such a young age. He had no right to make that decision. And to suggest he conveniantly 'forgot' to get permission from parents - you must be deluded. He should not be allowed to get away with his actions, the right decision was made to remove him from the school - its just a shame these actions weren't carried out sooner.

As an ex parent of children from Field End Junior School I would like to state that I never received permission slips to sign for any film that my children watched at the drama club.
There is obviously more to this situation than the showing of one film at Field End, otherwise why would the other Boroughs have made further investigations.
I for one am glad that this man is no longer anywhere near my children.

Im very disgusted that this is the second comment i have put on, as my other positive comment for some reason got left off! (how funny). any way, i am very angry with people making negative comments as vertially everyone that has left a negative comment doesnt know this man. i am a 25 year old man and i know that the kids that mr stringer has taught have all gone on to better things in life, not just what he teaches them but the confidence he gives them, i would like to see the state of some of the parents that are complaining, i think they should look at the family life before complaining.
i am fully in support of this man, and i hope that people actually know the facts before commenting. because for a start i believe it only two schools involved and not three.
i severely hope that this comment and my early comment both get added.

As previously stated everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Knowing Mr Stringer I feel it vital that some comments are corrected, Mr Stringer HAS NOT been removed from 3 schools in 3 areas!! A full picture has not been painted of this man and I appreciate that in a short article this is not possible. Maybe we should be more focused on more pressing issues in our world today rather than one man who made a simple mistake which has led to a vicious attack on him and his family. I feel it is time to leave this man alone. MR Stringer is not a threat to any child within our community and people who brand him this way should think strongly before making such allegations.

Why are people up in arms about this man's reputation when he has admitted to showing a film with nudity, sex and torture to extremely young children? He shows no remorse. He is under investigation by 3 local authorities. How much more will it take for you to take your blinkers off?

The facts are:
This man showed a sexually explicit film to to children as young as seven - ask yourselves what kind of man would even want to be in this situation??
He does not see anything wrong in these actions
the following investigation has resulted in his removal from 3 schools in 3 boroughs.
Come on people - open your eyes. These actions are not taken lightly and it is highly likely there are bits to this story that we as the public do not know. we must trust that the decisions that have been taken to protect our children are the right ones. Im sure they have stopped the innocence of any more children being damaged.
maybe there is a reason he "forgot" to obtain parental consent on this occasion? having seen the film i certainly would not have granted it.

Mr Stringer taught my son drama at Field end school, he also attended the after school drama club and was in many of the productions that Mr Stinger spent many hours of his personal time organising. He has encouraged my son to take his acting career further into secondary school and onto university. The people who are continuing this vitriolic campaign against him are depriving students of an inspirationial teacher. Its an absolute disgrace.

Those on the attack here should perhaps consider how they'd like to be treated if they made a paperwork error and forgot to send out a permission slip one year.
Do also remember the film has been shown many many times over many many years by this teacher as part of his very well respected Shakespeare drama group.
Also let us add some facts about how this film is viewed with regards to children and education. See this Guardian story from 1999:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/1999/jan/24/martinbright.theobserver
- and note that it says that every school in Britain was sent free tickets and that the film was to be shown in schools, and the other comments made about it, etc. etc.
Schools and teachers, just like parents at home, are not subject to cinema ratings.
Still, why let facts get in the way of a good kicking of a seemingly devoted teacher...

Mr Stringer was a First class teacher,if not one of the best at Field End School, and is very sorely missed, the whole situation was handled very poorly,i find it amazing how judgemental people can be,when no-one complained when their children were performing in his shows,i think there are a few parents who need to take a very good look into their own lives before they pass judgement. Mr Stringer has very much paid for one mistake in a very long career, and i know i am not alone in the fact our school has lost one of it's best teachers. Now maybe everyone will leave him and his family in peace.

Well if you take the time to read all these comments it appears that they are clearly divided into two categories: Comments from people who actually knew the teacher or were taught by him and are in total support of him, or Comments from people who did not know him or anything about him that are all a bit too quick to condemn him considering the complete lack of evidence or information that they have on the subject.
I think that says it all really!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but there can be absolutely no justification in showing sex and nudity to children and I find it most disconcerting that there are some who say the man should be left alone. Get real. The man has admitted it, sees no wrong and would apparently have continued to show the film. And did the 48 parents who didn't complain know what their children were watching? Were those children comfortable with what they saw or are they scarred and ashamed to tell anyone? God help this country if people can't see this is wrong but thank God there are those prepared to make a stand on behalf of our children.

Mr Stringer taught 2 of my daughters.
He was by far the best drama teacher either of them had.
He never put a foot wrong, and he was always sending us parental aproval slips for things like showing the kids films at their drama club. Parents who then didn't want to have their children see this of that would not give their permission.
Their Shakespeare productions were amazing, and packed out with proud parents. Both of my daughters taught by Mr Stringer went on to do more in drama, he inspired them so much. One even appeared on the West End Stage.
While it seems he was unwell, and of course as always caring for his disabled wife, he seems to have forgotten a set of approval slips. A verbal warning type error.
I hope he wins a great deal of money from those who are jumping on the bandwagon with childish attacks on one of the best teachers in this area. The PC brigade really are embarrasing aren't they.
As far as I know, he has never been accused of any wrong doing with any child in his care in his entire career.
As for the film. If you can find many young girls who have not watched Shakespeare in Love I will be surprised.

Shakespeare in Love was rated 15 by the BBFC. Showing it to children under this age is not only irresponsible, doing so in a public place probably IS illegal.

I feel he should not be allowed to work with children again. He has no right to make decisions on what a group of 7-8yr old children can watch, especially a film that has been given a 15 rating. As a nation we keep saying how our children are growing up too quickly, what chance do we have when their teachers are showing inappropriate material of such a sexual nature.

I am disturbed that they can treat him this way, he does not deserve it and plenty of people would stand by his side. His punishment for this one stupid incident is being taken way too far. For three seperate incidences to warrant investigations in three different boroughs says it all. This man has shown no responsibility to the children in his care and I would not let him within a mile of my children, let alone in a classroom. I am in total agreement that this man should not be teaching. Head teachers and teachers have a duty to protect the children in their school. If they fail to put the children first, then they too should be investigated. We should listen to children and thank God that they speak out.

If Mr Stringer "refuted all allegations made against him and said he had been the victim of a hostile campaign." but then admits that he did show the film to under aged children, then surely there are other allegations against him that have called for his dismissal? I find it hard to believe that three schools could form a campaign against someone who has done nothing wrong. I think everyone needs to trust in the people who have taken action to stop this man teaching children. Lets be glad that some people have the guts to stand up and take action even if others are so naive that they can't see what is clearly in front of them.

Even if the police do not deem this a criminal offence, it is certainly not the actions of a responsible adult (let alone teacher) whos first priority is the welfare of the children in his care.
In a time where the protection of children by those in authority is constantly being scrutinised surely we should view the removal of any teacher with attitudes like this as a step the right direction.
Had I been the parent of one of those children I would have been outraged and would have expected nothing less than the removal of this man from the position he abused.

Mr Stringer is a brilliant teacher and ran a club that got children enthusiastic about shakespear. He has always been professional with the children. He is a wonderful man and has no malice in him. Although this may at first seem to be a trivial matter, the showing of any material to children is regulated for a reason. It is totally inappropriate for such young children to be subjected to a film such as this (Shakespear in love). As a teacher and a person in a position on control and authority Mr.Stringer has a responsibility to those children in his care. This act has shown that he is not capable of making sound and safe choices. I for one am glad that action has been taken. The fact that the police dropped any investigation should not be taken as proof of innocence, I’m sure the police have other things to worry about, and I’m sure most of us have, at some time been the victim of some injustice that the police have not investigated due to various constraints. I think the parents that did complain should be thanked for being brave enough to speak out.

"No evidence a crime was committed" doesn't mean that he's a fit person to teach. At best, he made a very large error of judgement. If there aren't further grounds for summarily dismissing him, let him take his employer to a tribunal and win handsome damages. Or sue for libel, and win even more.

The fact alone that this "teacher" feels it is ok to show children as young as 7 shakespeare in love which is rated 15 and classified Restricted in America is appaling. I cant help but wonder how an normal adult could be comfortable in a room watching these scenes with kids as young as 7.
The film contains several sex scenes which do not portray sex as a loving act. I can not understand how is not deemed illegal for a person in his position of trust to show a 15 rated film to anyone under that age. I wonder how many parents knew the content of the "Shakespeare" film being shown to their children in drama. This particular film is not even a work of the Bard. In Mr stringers own words he highlights " these allegations against me" What allegations? are there others? It seems unlikely that in these days of wrongful dismissal claims that a school would sack an employee lightly and then go as far as to publicly warn the parents and pupils to avoid contact with the individual. No smoke without fire? i just hope they are telling the whole story.

I think it is completely inexcusable to show a certificate 15 film to a group of 7 and 8 year olds. The BBFC have awardrd the film this classification for a reason.
This may not be aciminal activity, but it is unprofessional.
As for apologising, but stating his intention to continue to show the film - this merely shows a level of arrogance and contempt for authority.
