Met chief to visit World Cup site in security tour

Britain's most senior policeman will inspect preparations for the 2010 World Cup during a visit to South Africa this week.

Met Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson will visit the landmark Green Point Stadium tomorrow during a visit to Cape Town.

He will be briefed by South Africa's police commissioner, Jackie Seleb, about security measures for the tournament, which begins next June.

When Sir Paul took office less than two weeks ago he said one of the biggest tasks he faced was ensuring security at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

The trip will lay bare the amount of work the police and Government have yet to do.

Fears have arisen that security preparations are lagging behind because of wrangling over the £600million budget.

In December, former head of Olympic security Tarique Ghaffur warned delays in producing a policing masterplan meant time was running short.
