Investigation into octuplets' IVF doctor

Ed Harris
11 Feb 2009

The fertility doctor who implanted embryos into the Californian mother of octuplets is under investigation by a medical body.

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine is concerned because Nadya Suleman says she received IVF for all 14 of her children at the same Beverly Hills fertility clinic.

Miss Suleman, 33, told NBC's Today show that she was implanted with six embryos in each of her six pregnancies, resulting in four single births, a set of twins and the octuplets.

No more than three embryos are considered the norm for a woman her age.

The society has contacted Miss Suleman, who gave birth to the octuplets, six boys and two girls, in a Los Angeles hospital two weeks ago.

Her doctor has been named as Dr Michael Kamrava, a specialist who pioneered a method of implantation.

That's the question that's been killing me, "Who paid???" She wasn't working. My husband and I can't afford IVF or ICSI treatments, they run into the thousands of dollars. And we have what's considered "great" insurance! We will have to be content with our three dogs. I'd love to know so that I could have just one child.

No doubt these poor little kids will sooner or later become all property of the US state through all types of taxpayer founded benefits. This so called Dr.should therefore be tried for child cruelty,(will anyone actually have anytime for them?)for gross misuse of his services on a woman who already had 7 children(whos mother and taxpayers are already subsidising) and made to sell his business to pay for their upbringing. Until something serious happens to these people we will always hear these sad stories about helpless kids.
