£28bn Shard of Glass to start its ascent
Mira Bar-Hillel24 Feb 2009
Building Europe's tallest skyscraper will begin next month after the multi-million pound construction contract was signed today.
The massive £2 billion Shard of Glass complex at London Bridge station will contain offices, hotel, flats, shops and leisure facilities.
Construction company Mace group today signed the building contract, believed to be worth £400 million, which covers the construction of the Shard itself, due to be completed by spring 2012.
The 80-storey Shard, designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, will generate construction jobs as well as providing accommodation for as many as 8,000 people on completion.
Site demolition has already been completed.

Why hasn't Boris stopped this ugly egomaniac blot from destroying London's historic centre? It will be torn down in twenty years like most other tall buildings in London are at the moment- because they are hideous.

Let's hope more skyscrapers will rise and have the proper infrastructure in place so that London can look more like a world class city than some ancient village, like it is now.

Where did you get the £28bn from Mira? I wish! Either way, brilliant news.

The Shard is a stunning building. It will be London's Empire State/Chrysler building, and it WON'T be torn down in our life times.
